Before I even start this essay, I just want to say thank you for this amazing opportunity. My name is Abenego Commue, and I was born in Liberia. Never once had it crossed my mind that I would be given a chance to pursue my dream of becoming a professional pilot. From my father, I learned what it means to have ambition, the undying urge to chase your passion, not for yourself but for others. Because when you succeed, you open doors for others to follow in your footsteps. During my first years at Delaware State University, I faced many obstacles. I was a shy, timid kid from a foreign country, and adapting to a new environment was challenging. Leaving my family wasn't easy, but it was a sacrifice that had to be made. At times, I didn't have enough money to purchase books and meals, so I had to prioritize what was more essential—and that was the books. Often, I was late to class due to a lack of transportation, but I didn't let that stop me from chasing my dreams. In the back of my mind, I knew my family depended on me to make an impact. To be able to give them hope that with drive and focus, you can achieve anything. I ended up finishing the year with A/B honor roll and flew for the first time in a plane. I sent the video to my family, and they were so proud of me. Even the little kids were happy and inspired to be pilots as well. Nothing beats the feeling of giving hope to your family. Seeing people in a positive headspace, knowing that they too can achieve anything, is priceless to me. Just knowing I can affect my community in a positive way gives me the drive to keep going. Ambition is more than a personal quest; it is a beacon for others. When I left Liberia, I carried the hopes and dreams of my family and community with me. My journey was not just about learning to fly but about proving that determination and hard work can break barriers. Each challenge I faced—from financial hardships to adapting to a new culture—fueled my ambition. I understood that my success would ripple through my community, inspiring others to dream big. The impact of my journey extends beyond personal achievement. When I share my successes with my family, I see the spark of hope in their eyes. My younger siblings and cousins now dream of soaring high, just as I do. This transformation within my community is my greatest accomplishment. It drives me to push through every obstacle because I know that my journey lights the way for others. In conclusion, my drive and ambition are rooted in a desire to create a lasting impact. By overcoming my challenges and pursuing my passion, I aim to inspire my community to believe in their potential. Together, we can rise above our circumstances and achieve greatness. This is not just my journey; it is our journey. And I am committed to making every step count.
