"Abdur I know you dont feel like it today, but this choice will show your teammates that this is okay and this is not the leader I see you being". I read this text message from my Coach Walt the day that I skipped practice after I won the title of being named All-Public League cross country. Me winning an medal made me feel as though I did not need to work hard anymore , I reflected on this and now know what I did was wrong. I run track,cross country and sometimes I play basketball these three sports have all shaped me as an person.When I do an sport I make sure to give it all anytime I am on the court or track, giving anything less than the best is to sacrifice gift of success. I embody this statement by putting in work everyday after school towards running and making myself an better athlete.This year is very important to me because I am an senior and I have the honor of being named the team captain.The text message that my coach sent me over an year ago still resonates with me and I have done things based off of it. I have set good examples for teammates at practice because I know sports are important ,but the person you are is more important.I encourage them by running at there pace,setting doable goals,holding them accountable for missing practices,lifting each other up and enjoying the moments together. I feel like this makes me an better athlete , but after high school an even better person. The David G. Sutton scholarship will go to good use if I am given the honor of having it. I have characteristics of integrity,grit,determination and leadership , which are important traits for an recipient of this scholarship and traits I believe David embodied.
