I have chosen to pursue a career in mental health therapy because I want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people in my community. Growing up in Clay County, I have witnessed how struggles such as drug addiction and other hardships can take control of a person’s life and affect not only the individual, but also their families and the community as a whole. Seeing these challenges firsthand has made me realize how important it is for people to have someone who will listen to them, support them, and guide them toward a healthier path. Because of this, I want to become a mental health therapist who can help individuals recognize their strength and understand that they are capable of overcoming the obstacles they face. Many people who struggle with addiction, depression, anxiety, or other life difficulties often feel like they are trapped in a cycle that they cannot escape. I want to be someone who helps them see that their situation does not define their future. With the right support, guidance, and encouragement, people can rebuild their lives and move toward a more positive direction. Mental health professionals play an important role in helping individuals work through trauma, cope with life changes, and develop healthier ways of thinking and living. Knowing that I could help someone take those first steps toward healing is one of the main reasons I feel so strongly about pursuing this field. My personal experiences have also influenced my decision to pursue a career in mental health therapy. As a child of divorce, I have seen the emotional impact that major life changes can have on a person and a family. During difficult times, counseling can provide a safe place for individuals to express their feelings, process what they are going through, and find ways to move forward. Seeing the positive difference that counseling can make in someone’s life has inspired me to want to provide that same kind of support for others who may be going through challenging situations. In the future, I hope to use my education and training to serve the people in my community. My goal is to become someone who others feel comfortable turning to when they need help, guidance, or simply someone to listen. By helping individuals work through their struggles and improve their mental health, I believe I can also help strengthen families and the community as a whole. I want to show people that they are not alone and that change is possible. Through compassion, understanding, and professional support, I hope to help others find hope, healing, and the confidence to build a better future for themselves.

When I think about the people who have shaped the person I am today, one teacher stands out above the rest: Mrs. Montgomery. I had the privilege of being her student from my freshman through junior year of high school in Early Childhood Development. My connection with her did not happen overnight. It was a slow burn that grew over time, built on the care, respect, and encouragement she gave every single day. Mrs. Montgomery stood barely five feet tall, but her ambition and presence filled the room. She saw each of her students as something special, not just test scores or grades. She went beyond the classroom curriculum, teaching us lessons about life, compassion, and faith. She was open about her belief in Jesus, yet she always remained respectful toward those who held different views. Her confidence in who she had inspired me to stay true to my own values and to treat others with kindness, no matter our differences. What made Mrs. Montgomery so special was her ability to notice the small things. On the first day of my sophomore year, she immediately noticed that I had cut my hair, something not even my closest friends had mentioned. That moment reminded me that she truly saw me. She made me feel loved and cared for every single day, even when she was dealing with personal struggles of her own, like caring for her sick mother. Her classroom no longer felt like another hour of school. Mrs. Montgomery believed in me when I did not always believe in myself. She encouraged me to join one of our school’s clubs, which I now proudly serve as President of. Without her guidance and confidence in me, I never would have had the courage to take on that kind of leadership role. Her support helped me see my own potential and gave me a sense of purpose I had not felt before. One of the things I admire most about her is her passion for learning. Despite her age and accomplishments, she continued attending college and pursuing higher education simply because she believed in always growing and improving. That attitude taught me that learning does not end when school does; it is something we should carry with us throughout life. Last school year, Mrs. Montgomery decided it would be her final year as our FCS (Family and Consumer Sciences) teacher, as she felt called to become a principal elsewhere. While it was bittersweet to see her go, I could not be prouder of her. I am honored to have been her student, but even more than that, I am grateful to have called her my friend. Mrs. Montgomery did not just teach Early Childhood Development; she developed hearts, confidence, and faith. She changed how I approach life, reminding me that true success is not about grades or titles, but about kindness, growth, and believing in others.

Poverty and homelessness are serious problems in my community. Clay County, Kentucky, has been named the hardest county to live in across the United States. Our median household income is only $22,296, and the jobless rate is 12.7 percent. The county also has a 45 percent obesity rate, an 11.7 percent disability rate, and a life expectancy of just 71.4 years. These numbers represent more than statistics, they reflect real families, neighbors, and friends facing daily challenges to meet basic needs. Seeing families around me face these challenges made me want to help. I wanted to find a way to make a difference that was simple, kind, and respectful. That is why I decided to set up blessing boxes around my community. These boxes are filled with food, clothes, and hygiene products that anyone can take if they need them. They also give people who are able to help an easy way to give back by leaving items for others. The blessing boxes have already made a positive impact. With help from local churches and volunteers, I have been able to keep them stocked and clean. Many people have told me that the boxes have helped them when times were tough, and others have been inspired to donate and support the project. In the future, I hope to add more boxes in other areas that need them most. I would also like to work with schools, churches, and local groups to keep the boxes full year-round. My goal is to build a stronger and more caring community where people help one another, and no one feels forgotten.

Few films have left as deep an impression on me as Life is Beautiful (La Vita è Bella) by Roberto Benigni. More than a story set during the Holocaust, it’s a powerful reminder of how love, hope, and imagination can survive even in the darkest times. Watching this film didn’t just move me emotionally, it changed how I view hardship, resilience, and the importance of maintaining humanity in the face of suffering. What made the experience even more profound was that I watched the film in its original Italian, with only English subtitles. Hearing the Italian dialogue, the emotions in the voices, the rhythm of the language, the cultural nuances allowed me to connect to the characters on a deeper level. Even though I didn’t understand every word, I felt every emotion. The struggle, humor, love, and fear became more vivid and personal. It was as if I was being invited into the characters' world, not just as a viewer, but as someone walking beside them. The film’s central character, Guido, is a joyful, imaginative man who uses humor to protect his young son from the horrors of a concentration camp. What struck me was not just his courage, but his determination to preserve his son's innocence, even when he himself was facing unspeakable suffering. Watching Guido’s spirit come to life in his native language gave his character an authenticity that no translation could fully capture. His jokes, the softness in his tone, and the urgency in his voice when danger loomed all of it felt raw and real. At the time I first watched Life is Beautiful, my family was going through a difficult period financially. Stress and uncertainty filled our days, and I often felt helpless. But this movie made me pause and reflect. Guido couldn’t change his circumstances, yet he never let his situation define his outlook or his love for his family. That message stayed with me. I realized that even when life feels out of control, I can choose how I respond, with strength, creativity, and care for those around me. The film also showed me how humor and imagination can be forms of resistance. Guido didn’t fight back with anger or violence; he fought back with joy, creating a game for his son to shield him from trauma. That lesson made me see the value of perspective. In my own life, I’ve learned to use kindness and optimism not to ignore pain, but to push through it, and to help others do the same. Life is Beautiful taught me that even in the worst circumstances, the human spirit can endure. Watching it in Italian helped me feel the soul of the story more intimately, deepening my understanding of the characters’ courage and love. This film didn’t just entertain me, it shaped how I think, how I feel, and how I live.

Growing up, my life looked very different than it does now. I came from a well-off family where I never worried about money or stability. But when my parents divorced, everything changed. Suddenly, it was just me and my mom, and we went from having more than enough to starting over with almost nothing. That experience opened my eyes to how quickly circumstances can change and taught me the value of resilience, gratitude, and perseverance. As I prepare to enter higher education, this financial reality is a challenge I cannot ignore. My mom has worked tirelessly to provide for us, but college expenses: tuition, books, and housing, are more than we can manage alone. That is why scholarships like this one mean so much to me. They make it possible for me to pursue my education and career goals without placing an impossible burden on my family. Part of what makes me so determined to pursue this path is my own personal experiences with the challenges young people face today. At a young age, I was deeply affected by the online world. Words and comments on social media left me hurt and discouraged, and for a while, I struggled with self-worth because of them. It took a lot of perseverance and inner strength to overcome that pain, but in doing so I grew stronger, more empathetic, and more determined to be a positive influence for others. That experience is one of the main reasons I am so passionate about protecting children and youth from in-person bullying and cyber-bullying. In my community, I have worked to encourage kindness and create safe spaces for others. Whether it’s helping younger students through church, or simply being someone who listens, I strive to show compassion and respect. For in-person bullying, I believe the strongest response is building a culture of empathy, reminding peers that standing up for someone who feels targeted can change their entire experience. Online, I promote awareness about the effects of words and digital actions. The internet can be a space for connection, but it can also spread negativity. I encourage my peers to think before posting, to be mindful of how words can cut deeply, and to use the online world as a place to lift others up rather than tear them down. Looking forward, I want to continue building on these experiences in my career. My goal is to own my own mental health clinic in my town, where I can dedicate my time to supporting young people, creating safe environments, and empowering them to rise above challenges. My own journey, losing financial stability after my parents’ divorce, and persevering through online bullying, has shaped me into someone who not only understands hardship but also knows the power of resilience. This scholarship would relieve the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus more on my education and service. My ultimate goal is not just personal success but to give back, to help ensure the next generation grows up in environments where they feel safe, respected, and valued. By investing in my education, you are also investing in the impact I will make in the lives of others. I am determined to take the challenges I’ve faced and use them as fuel to create a brighter, kinder future for the young people around me.
