The heart of my involvement in extracurricular activities is rooted in the principle of Sewa—the Hindu concept of selfless service performed without expectation of reward or personal gain. Service is not something that can be forced, but rather something that has to come passionately from within. It is a commitment to uplifting others physically, mentally, and materially. I believe that we as people are defined by how we support those around us.
My most profound experiences with Sewa have occurred at the Aastha Adult Medical Center, a clinic that provides free care to everyone, including the uninsured and the homeless. I was deeply touched by the loving environment of inclusivity I witnessed there that really resonated with my values. During my years volunteering there, I have assisted with taking vitals and navigating patients through the clinic. Interestingly, my academic background in French has also come in handy, allowing me to bridge the communication gap for some of the non-English speaking patients that come through. Additionally, seeing the whole community come together and help by translating so many different languages warmed my heart. Beyond clinical support, I spend time at their senior center facilitating painting, yoga, and games. There is an incomparable joy in seeing the smiles of seniors as they find community and connection. It strengthened my belief that service is just as much about emotional support as it is about physical aid.
As Co-Captain of Science Olympiad, I recognized that the pressure of competition could be daunting for younger students. To address this, I initiated one-on-one tutoring sessions in biology and chemistry, ensuring underclassmen feel empowered and prepared. Similarly, in my years playing cricket, I have transitioned into assisting younger players. I focus not just on their technical skills, but on their mental resilience, which I believe to be just as important. Positively changing and enabling the next generation is so important to me through everything I do.
As part of various Honor Societies and the Sewa organization, I reach further into my community. Through these paths, I have participated in everything from highway cleanups and monthly food drives to raising money to fund the education of financially struggling children in India. Whether it was collecting hundreds of pencils for schools in Benin through the French Honor Society or performing music at local temples to bring people together, I have seen how service and culture play hand-in-hand to strengthen our community.
Ultimately, service does not always require a grand gesture. Often, its most significant impact is found in the little things, like being a supportive friend to children with special needs or helping a neighbor with their garden. Just being there for someone when others aren’t is a blessing to them more than we will ever know. By embracing Sewa in every aspect of my life, I aim to create a ripple effect of empathy, support and learning. However, it can’t be done alone and there is always more to be accomplished, especially when done together. I wholeheartedly enjoy the process of giving, and I am dedicated to keeping this part of my life alive through both my actions and passing the joy of service to others everywhere I go. It’s a feeling that truly cannot be matched.
