Growing up with a single mother shaped every part of who I am today. Even though we did not have much money, my mother worked hard to give me and my brother a loving home. We lived in a small but decent apartment, and always made sure I had what I needed, even when she went without things herself. Looking back, I realize how much strength and sacrifice it took for her to raise me while also battling sarcoidosis that affected her kidneys. This serious illness slowly affected her health. Because of this, she was unable to finish college or maintain a job, which made life financially difficult for us. Even so, she never allowed her hardships to stop her from encouraging me to dream bigger.
My mother encouraged my love for the arts from a young age. Even when money was tight, she supported my creativity and believed that artistic expression was important. She always told me that my talents mattered and that I should never stop learning or creating. She valued education deeply and wanted me to have opportunities that she never had herself. No matter how difficult life became, she constantly reminded me to stay focused in school and work toward a better future.
My mother's compassion extended beyond herself. My brother is nonverbal and has autism, and despite her illness, she made an effort to learn sign language so she could better communicate with and support him. Watching her meet his needs while also battling her own health challenges showed me what unconditional love and selflessness truly looks like. She constantly put her children first, no matter how difficult life became.
As a child, I did not fully understand how serious her illness was, but I remember going with her to dialysis appointments and seeing how exhausting treatment could be for her. Some days she was weak or in pain, yet she found ways to comfort and encourage me. Watching her fight through her illness with strength and love taught me resilience at a very young age. She showed me what perseverance looks like, even when life was unfair.
Unfortunately, at the age of nine, my mother passed away and my life completely changed. Losing her so young was heartbreaking and forced me to grow up quickly. After her death, I moved in with my grandmother, who became my source of stability and support. She stepped in during one of the hardest moments of my life and has continued to encourage me to pursue my goals and education.
Growing up in these circumstances taught me empathy, gratitude, and determination. I understand what it feels like to struggle emotionally and financially, and those experiences have made me more compassionate towards others. Instead of letting hardship define me negatively, I use it as motivation to succeed and honor the sacrifices my mother made for me. Her strength, love for education, and encouragement of my creativity continue to inspire me every day as I work toward building a better future.

Art has always been the way I understand both myself and the world around me. I am a senior at Bethesda Christian Academy preparing to study art and animation in college, and for years I have used drawing as more than just a hobby. It has become my way of telling stories, exploring cultures, and creating characters that feel meaningful and alive. Whether I am sketching or making digital illustration for school projects, art is the place where I feel the most motivated and inspired.
Growing up, I was drawn to animated films, video games, and illustrated stories because of how powerful visual storytelling could be. A single design or character could communicate emotion, personality, and culture without saying a word. Over time, I realized my art was not only something I could enjoy but also something that could impact others in meaningful ways. This realization pushed me to take my artistic goals seriously and pursue my future in creative industries.
One of the things that matters most to me as an artist is representation. I enjoy creating original characters inspired by cultures, histories, and traditions that are not always centered in mainstream media. For example, I have designed fantasy characters inspired by Indigenous and Central African cultures because I want people to see strength, beauty, and creativity reflected in stories that are often overlooked. Through art and design, I hope to contribute to a creative industry where more people feel seen, respected, and included.
In college, I plan to study art and animation so I can work in the entertainment and gaming industry. I am especially interested in storytelling through color script, environments, and world building. Animation has the power to connect people across languages and backgrounds, and I want to create stories that leave audiences feeling inspired, understood, or comforted. Even a single character can make someone feel represented in a way they may never have experienced before.
Beyond entertainment, I believe art can create positive changes by encouraging empathy and curiosity. Art invites people to look at perspectives outside of their own, and it can start conversations that words alone sometimes cannot. As I continue developing my skills, I hope to use my creativity to build stories and designs that encourage others to appreciate different cultures, experiences, and identities. I also hope to inspire younger artists who may doubt their abilities or wonder whether there is space for their voices in creative industries. Seeing diverse artists succeed can motivate others to pursue their own passions with confidence.
Receiving this scholarship would help me continue pursuing my education and artistic goals with greater confidence. More importantly, it would support my journey toward creating meaningful work that positively impacts others through imagination, representation, and storytelling.
Big Picture Scholarship
“This? This is water. What I want is the ocean!” In the fish story that Dorothea Williams told to Joe Gardner after getting the gig of his dreams. This analogy is about finding joy in the present and appreciating the journey of life, rather than focusing only on a distant goal. Pixar’s Soul is the move that had the greatest impact on my life. This movie impacted my life by explaining that meaning comes from the simple, everyday moments you experience and genuine connection with others.
Some people’s “spark” is doing extraordinary things like becoming a famous jazz musician, politician, or just simply enjoying life. I have a big dream of working in the animation industry and at times it can be extremely stressful when trying to follow the footsteps of people who are already there. So, I decided to take things at my own pace and focus on the present. It was an obsessive passion, and passions like those can often be destructive if unchecked. And, I often fell into a state of panic if I found myself doing something that wasn’t correct or got upset if I couldn’t complete something others have done. But another good thing that Soul teaches us is to be kind to ourselves, learning to be comfortable in our own lives.
Sometimes, you have to find joy in the mundane. Soul emphasizes that happiness can be found in everyday experiences like eating a slice of pizza or petting a cat. Thanks to the film, I’ve learned to do that almost every day.
Because with focusing on the present, finding joy in the mundane, and your “spark”, shows that the meaning of life isn’t meant to be found in a grand purpose or single passion, life’s true value comes from appreciating the ordinary. To simply be alive and valued is enough. So, will I ever make it into the animation industry? Probably not. But, I know that I enjoyed the journey of getting there.
We are already enough and we deserve to enjoy what life has to offer. Meaning isn’t something that is earned through achievements, but is inherent in being alive. The film heavily emphasizes that you are enough.
One thing we can take away from Pixar’s Soul is to have gratitude for the present, life is more than a single dream, and joy is in the journey. Like in the movie, Joe Gardner believes his only purpose in life is to play jazz, but after achieving that dream, he realizes that it isn’t the only source of fulfillment. The “climb” and the process of working towards a goal can be more significant than the goal itself. And, most importantly, we need to stop and appreciate what is already present in our lives.
