Bio

By exploring my passion within the study of biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University and with a medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, I hope to work towards a career in medicine in which I get to use my personal passion for helping others whether I am performing surgeries or working in the lab. All the work I intend to do will make healthcare more accessible to the under-privileged. An increased supply of donor’s hearts (all thanks to my future research endeavors) will help transplant patients of all socio-economic levels. Performing pro-bono surgeries at hospitals for high-need patients will transform the lives of many. The local healthcare programs I want to start will benefit families that cannot afford insurance or families that do not have access to any care. My goal isn’t to only help those that can afford medical care.

    Here's a stronger, more personal response that is about 450 words and emphasizes both your accomplishments and your impact on empowering other women: As a first-generation college student and the daughter of immigrants, my journey has been defined by perseverance, self-reliance, and a commitment to opening doors for other women. Growing up, I rarely encountered women who looked like me pursuing careers in engineering or medicine, and I quickly realized that many of the opportunities available to me would have to be earned rather than inherited. Despite financial challenges and the absence of a roadmap for navigating higher education, I remained determined to pursue my goals. I earned both my Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and am now a medical student with aspirations of becoming a cardiologist. Throughout every stage of my education, I have independently funded my tuition and living expenses. By working multiple jobs, tutoring students, and making countless sacrifices, I have been able to support myself while pursuing my dreams. I hope that my story demonstrates to young women, especially first-generation students, that their ambitions are not limited by their circumstances. Beyond my personal achievements, I have dedicated myself to empowering others through mentorship, teaching, and service. Throughout college and during my gap year, I tutored students across a wide range of subjects and helped many develop confidence in their academic abilities. I have always believed that representation matters, and I strive to be the mentor that I once needed. As a medical student, I have continued this commitment through leadership roles focused on mentorship and community engagement, including serving as a Service Learning Program Chair, Teal Squad Volunteer Chair, and Recruitment Chair for Matthew Carter Service Day. These positions have allowed me to support my peers, promote service initiatives, and foster inclusive environments where women and students from diverse backgrounds feel encouraged to succeed. By sharing the lessons I learned navigating higher education without familial precedent or financial support, I hope to make these paths more accessible for future generations. My desire to pursue cardiology is also rooted in advancing women's health and increasing female representation within medicine. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among women, yet women have historically been underrepresented in cardiovascular research and specialty leadership. I hope to contribute to changing that reality through compassionate patient care, research, and mentorship.     Sweet Dreams Scholarship
    In light of my mother's inability to afford a babysitter for her toddler, she often had to take me to her classes. Luckily, I grew up in the Dallas suburbs, where there was a Bengali enclave. I benefitted from this pseudo-family. However, I never envisioned the day I would start losing them. There is a higher-than-average occurrence of heart disease in South Asian communities. This statistic turned true in my life as I witnessed uncles of mine die. My Babbu uncle was one of them. He was always smiling, even when I was a toddler, running around his home & making a mess. After a heart attack, his left ventricle gave out. There was a point when the heart only represented pain to me until I discovered a TEDx talk. Dr. Vunjak-Novakovic spoke on controlling cell fate & creating tissue. From that moment, idealistic 11-year-old Aamilah was enamored. Since then, I have set out to enter medicine with a cellular engineering background. From that point forward I knew I wanted a biomedical engineering background with an emphasis on tissue engineering, with hopes of creating new tissue for clinical use. This led to my research experiences at the University of Michigan and Hopkins. Before my own eyes, I witnessed 3D cardiac tissue that I seeded beat & contract. I watched tissue electrical waves populate the computer screen, supporting the fact that my tissue substrates have physiological electrical properties. It’s awe-inspiring and magical to watch, knowing that I could create functional tissue with various biomaterials. To set this goal in motion, I pursued the B.S./M.S.E. program in Biomedical Engineering to learn everything I could about cellular and tissue engineering, biomaterials, and organ mechanics. However, I recognized that before I could devote myself to medicine just yet, I wanted to acquaint myself with hospital work. This led me to volunteer at my local hospital in Texas. I quickly realized how stressful one medical appointment can be. Undocumented women walked into the mammography clinic, & when I asked about insurance, many women left the clinic. I felt powerless—and I carried that feeling until I began my clinical internship at Chase-Brexton. Working with a different patient population at an LGBTQ+ clinic in Baltimore, I realized I had plenty to learn—identity-affirming language and services offered. I was armed with plenty of resources. When uninsured patients walked in, I readily scheduled them. When transgender patients wanted advice on the legal name change process, I delineated the costs and timelines. Patients walked in feeling anxious, but after having talked to me, they felt reassured since they got help—be it a gender-affirming surgery appointment or group therapy. This is significant for this patient population; they have often been turned down at other clinics, facing biases with medical staff. It’s incredibly meaningful to them when they finally feel heard & get assistance from me. My personal experiences led me to my initial interest in translatable medicine; as a result, I have had a near-lifelong fascination with the complexities of cells in our organs. However, my clinical experiences were fundamental in showing me the personhood of medicine. I want to enter medicine to enact narrative-centered care & to propel the clinical translation of engineered tissue patches for cardiac medicine. At the end of the day, I hope to care for communities like the one I grew up in; pseudo-families full of first-generation immigrants, often scared they won’t be listened to & adequately cared for in medical appointments. I want to use my engineering background to address gaps in cardiac medicine, and conjointly focus on the personhood & backgrounds of my patients.
    Ross Mitchell Memorial Scholarship
    The Biomedical Engineering program forced a Jack-of-all-trades, Master-of-none mindset. Each class’s subject matter was so vastly different that it felt like our heads were spinning. We walked away with snippets of biomedical engineering and had little idea of how to apply many concepts. At first glance, it was discouraging and tore down my goal of taking classes to fulfill my love of learning. I had to chase after my tail to complete homework assignments. So consumed by the distinct assignments—I forgot how to fall in love with the material in my classes. I felt like a robot. As a freshman, I tried desperately to take courses at precisely the same time as my peers in my program. I naively felt compelled to overload my schedule for sophomore fall. To make matters worse, these classes were entirely virtual because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Little did I know that I signed myself up to take the most challenging courses of the program while overloading. I struggled immensely as soon as the courses started. Rather than watch myself flail, I dropped a class before any examinations and opted to take it in the summer when the course was in person. Dropping a single class was the wisest decision I made at Hopkins. I vowed to myself to take the time to find passion in my coursework. Instead of feeling like a robot, doing assignments just to do assignments, I found love again in the class material. Much of this came from taking my time to research the applications of the concepts from classes. I began asking professors more questions, engaging in office hours, and seeking out projects where I could apply what I was learning to real-world biomedical problems. This shift in mindset transformed my experience. I started to appreciate the value of interdisciplinary exposure, recognizing how each course—no matter how disconnected it felt—contributed to a broader understanding of human health and medical innovation. I even found myself mentoring younger students who were going through the same struggles I once faced. In doing so, I ultimately completed the program faster than some of my peers. However, I didn’t care. I was not measuring whether I was at the same pace as my peers. What mattered to me was that I was learning as much as possible within the cellular/tissue engineering realm, all with hopes of applying regenerative techniques to a medical career. By prioritizing my learning rather than following my peers’ pace, I completed my undergraduate and Master’s degrees within four years—on my terms, and with my passion fully reignited.
    Pandemic's Box Scholarship
    COVID-19 has transformed my entire lifestyle and thinking. I lean towards being more cautious than others despite state governments allowing businesses to open again. I have approached many situations where one tries to shake my hand. To learn to avert this was a process. As an incoming pre-medical student at Johns Hopkins, I have studied the ins-and-outs of the virus’s progression. I have studied the structure of the virus and the symptoms that develop. As a result, I have learned exactly what to do to avoid contracting the sickness. It revolves around the basic knowledge that human hands may be the “dirtiest” surface on the entire planet. I recall doing one specific “miniature” study when I was little. I swabbed a gas pump and then I swabbed the surface of a toilet. I wanted to see which surface would have more bacterial growth. Everyone around me thought the toilet seat was more likely to the most growth. They were very wrong. Knowing this, I have kept surfaces clean and minimized how often I touch things, even in my own home. Of course, I have maintained 6 feet of distance from everyone, including my family. Beyond this, I have had to grasp what “self-quarantine” is like. It entails self-discovery because of the suddenly plentiful free time. It included periods of anxiety. What pacified me in such times was researching what we were up against. Unbeknownst to some, unfortunately, we are not up against the Chinese. The biggest thing I have learned from this pandemic is that the United States government in its current form cannot support the under-resourced in times of crisis. Small businesses crippled. Many would blame the lack of an influx of customers and thus demand businesses re-open for their convenience. Many cite that businesses need to re-open to support the economy. This goes to show that to many, convenience and money mean more than lives. As a future doctor, it truly disgusts me. This pandemic has led me to change my mindset and strengthen my political views. The government should be able to sustain small businesses and under-resourced families such that everyone is safe. If it gives in to the people that are dying for haircuts and toting guns to state capitols, then it is being careless with people’s lives. In response to the government’s failure to support small businesses without risking additional lives, I have been avidly “Post-mating” food from local restaurants. Truthfully, I cannot eat as much food as I am ordering. I just want to contribute so they can sustain for the time being. I have been giving a lot of the food to neighbors by dropping it off on door stops to ensure that we decrease spread. A lot of them have been struggling to buy meals because of how unstable their work is right now. Anything I can do to help, I will do it. COVID-19 has been traumatic to many. I am fortunate enough to be educated about it, and I am fortunate enough to have the resources to make self-quarantine comfortable for my family. I know for many that the pandemic is their worst nightmare. I acknowledge my economic and educational privilege. Using both, I have been informing others as to how to stay safe all while providing meals to local families.

Women of color have disproportionately higher death rates because of their concerns not being taken seriously by doctors. Braceros (Hispanic migrant farmworkers during World War II) were sprayed down with carcinogenic pesticides. The list of injustices goes on. Watching the current state of politics unravel angers me. I feel powerless. All that has occurred recently, spanning from race riots to migrants in detention centers, leaves me feeling as though any feeling of safety and fair treatment is crumbling around us. Getting medical help, for many, is daunting. It represents plunging into thousands of dollars of medical fees. Many cannot even afford insulin to survive. It is unimaginable for me to not use my education to help those failed by systemic racism and sexism. History’s injustices have rooted themselves in medicine. With the current healthcare system, doctors cannot help the number of patients they have the potential to aid. Patients in need only lose. With the work I will do, I hope to combat history’s injustices with accessible and widespread healthcare.
