Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My goal is quite simple: complete my master's degree in organizational communication. I'm currently halfway through the program. I am blessed to be working for an organization who believes in me and allocates the time I need to work on my assignments, research, and tackle my reading assignments. I have a supportive husband, and my friends encourage me to keep up with my studies. Academically, I am a 4.0 student and what you would have called "gifted" back in the day. I avoid trouble, I turn my assignments in on time and am an engaging student in my class discussions. How does someone like me need to create a plan and work my designed plan, like Joe Gilroy modeled?
I suffer from both physical and mental disabilities. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, I am not alone. I am a statistic - there are millions of Americans who suffer from these invisible illnesses are try their darndest to continue working to support their families. The statistic is growing - each year more and more employees are disclosing their own disabilities. This is not to garner sympathy, but rather the need for survival as an associate. There is fear of sharing one's illness - will they be judged? Will their teammates begrudgingly take on their tasks should someone be out of office or at the physician? Will I be seen as overdramatizing the chronic pain I suffer? Will I be skipped over on project assignments because my team thinks I am unreliable?
The road is not easy though for someone with disabilities. My weaknesses are invisible - you cannot tell I am physically broken and am fighting a fierce battle inside my body each day. People do not look at me and say to themselves "she's disabled." I often joke that the only thing that can kick my butt is myself. Sadly, as time goes on, the list of "things wrong with me" continues to grow. No one wants to be chronically sick, disabled or feel the constantly feeling wracked with guilt when I have to cancel plans with my friends, family, and peers - AGAIN - because of my illnesses. Someone can only be empathetic to the excuse "I don't feel well enough to go" so many times.
My plan is a simple one: I must remain resilient. How someone remains resilient varies depending on their diagnosis, but for me, it is fairly straightforward: continue forward with my life the best I can. My goal is to graduate with my degree in December 2025. I plan to work full time, as I have been the entire first year of my program, and take courses throughout the entire year (yes, including summers.) The only unknown regarding my plan is my health. Will I have the energy to get up and continue forward with my day-to-day assignments as my body continues to slowly deteriorate over the rest of my life.
I plan to use my master's degree in organizational communication as a tool to continue to advocate for those like me - people with mental health challenges, physical ailments, or those who just feel alone because they can't participate in "regular life." I don't know what the future holds, but I want to be a mouthpiece for the community and fearlessly go forward despite my disabilities.
Thank you for your consideration for this scholarship.
Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
I've never felt normal. As a child, ordering my own food at restaurants terrified me, and I would cry at the mere thought of wearing a t-shirt with a tag. I stuck to a routine, eating the same foods and wearing the same style of clothing—plaid skirts with sneakers and a t-shirt—day in and day out. Even as a kid, I had a knack for spotting spelling errors on websites long before I was trained to edit content. My brain was a whirlwind of creativity, but it often stumbled when faced with analytical tasks. I didn't embrace my uniqueness until my third-grade teacher suggested to my mom that she learn more about "highly sensitive people." We feel things deeply, thrive on routine, and are frequently misunderstood. And so, my journey began.
Throughout my life, I've been labeled as weird. At my very first psychiatry visit, I was diagnosed as "quirky," with the psychiatrist brushing off my debilitating fears and anxieties about new places as nothing to worry about. This realization ignited a fire within me—a journey of self-discovery and advocacy. Finally, after years of struggle, I received the diagnoses I had long suspected: anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
Despite working at a health system, I found myself on a psychiatrist's waitlist for 13 months. I pleaded my case, explaining that mental illness runs in my family and that as an employee, I couldn't perform my work without stabilizing medication. I had a supportive partner, but I needed more—I needed professional help to navigate my irrational fears, like the dread of a car wash or the paranoia of being kidnapped in a store parking lot.
In 2023, tragedy struck my department. Six colleagues passed away in horrific accidents, two of them by suicide, both young men under 30. The loss was devastating—one, a recent college graduate struggling with his first job; the other, a father of three who felt he had veered too far down a dark path. Our department and organization were left reeling.
One day, I stumbled upon an article on our internal intranet site discussing the rising suicide rates among doctors. It was my chance to speak up. I wrote to the health system leaders, highlighting the flaws in our employee mental health resources and the dire need for improvement. Within a day, the entire behavioral health leadership knew who I was. Despite my initial fears of reprisal, I was met with empathy and action.
The head psychiatrist came to speak to our department, and over 300 people attended the voluntary training session. We implemented new strategies for mental wellness, including meditation Wednesdays, a book club, and one-on-one counseling. My experience of being shut down by society fueled my advocacy for the over 800 people in my department, many of whom I hadn't even met since being hired during the pandemic lockdown.
I always say, at least nowadays, that my mental illnesses are my biggest strength. I am a great organizer because I pay attention to details. I am someone people can vent to when they're explaining how their therapist didn't take them seriously. I am someone people come to when they want hard things to be done because I am obsessed with an outcome. I am proud to say I am not normal - I am different enough to be able to make a change.
Combined Worlds Scholarship
Travel enriches the mind in unparalleled ways, engaging and deepening our senses unlike any other method. It allows us to savor authenticity, to witness the rhythms of daily life in different corners of the world. Among the myriad of countries I've visited, several experiences stand out profoundly, particularly those involving humanitarian work.
It's disheartening to observe how some individuals use voluntourism as a means to showcase their travels, seeking validation through likes garnered from photos featuring impoverished children. This exploitation of vulnerability is ethically problematic. We must refrain from capitalizing on the struggles of the less fortunate in pursuit of influencer status.
Despite the prevalence of such practices, few are aware of my personal involvement in humanitarian efforts across Africa and Asia. In Uganda, I dedicated myself to educating girls about puberty and menstruation, recognizing that the inability to attend school due to menstruation is a grave injustice, particularly in this modern age. Additionally, I contributed to the construction of a new library and the revitalization of a classroom.
In Kenya, I continued my efforts by providing maturation lessons to girls and supporting the creation of sustainable gardens alongside women in the village. In India, I collaborated with Rotary International to mobilize over $25,000 in microloans for widows. These loans empowered them to establish businesses, educate their daughters, and remarkably, achieve a 100% repayment rate over the course of 15 years.
I often find myself reflecting on the girls I've had the privilege to assist. Though our paths may never cross again, the imprint they've left on my heart is indelible. The moments we spent together, occupying the same space despite our differing languages and lifestyles, are cherished memories. In those shared breaths and shared affections, we found common ground that transcended any barriers.
Travel holds immense significance because it fosters qualities like humility, empathy, and love for our fellow inhabitants of this vast and beautiful world. It's through these encounters, where we immerse ourselves in unfamiliar cultures and connect with people from diverse backgrounds, that we truly expand our perspectives and deepen our understanding of humanity.
Using my masters in organizational communication to elevate the messages of the women I've had the privilege to serve is a core part of my future plans. Strengthening my skills in this area will enable me to effectively raise awareness and advocate for their needs. I believe that by leveraging my expertise, I can amplify their voices and bring attention to the issues they face.
Through my studies and experiences, I've recognized the power of communication in driving social change. My goal is to use my platform to shed light on the challenges and successes of these women, ultimately working towards greater equality and empowerment. I'm passionate about making a tangible difference in the world around me, and I see my education as a powerful tool to do just that.
Thank you for this opportunity!
Headbang For Science
As a woman navigating the male-dominated realm of IT, I've often found solace and inspiration in the inclusivity and empowerment fostered within the heavy metal community. Bands like Nightwish and Amaranth have paved the way for women, providing them with platforms to showcase their skills and talents. Drawing from their example, I've carved out my own niche as a process architect within a prestigious healthcare organization.
In my professional journey, I frequently encounter the challenge of being one of the few females in my field, a reflection of the underrepresentation faced by women in heavy metal. Despite this, I strive to embody the confidence and expertise exhibited by female metal vocalists like Tarja Turunen and Floor Jansen. Their mastery of their craft inspires me to assert my capabilities and contribute meaningfully to my profession.
My decision to pursue a master's degree in organizational communication stems from my desire to enhance patient care by refining communication channels and optimizing processes. Leveraging Lean Six Sigma methodologies, I aim to implement efficient systems that prioritize patient well-being and satisfaction.
Beyond my professional endeavors, my passion for music, particularly heavy metal, serves as both a source of solace and inspiration. From receiving my first Metallica cassette tape at just 18 months old to the unforgettable experience of witnessing Metallica live during the 2023 Metallica takeover in St. Louis (MO), music has been a steadfast companion through life's trials and triumphs.
Attending over 115 concerts, I've come to view live music as an integral part of my own therapy. It's ironic how songs like "Sanitarium" or "One," which delve into mental struggles, have become essential to my well-being. In moments of darkness, the memories and emotions evoked by live events serve as a guiding light, reminding me of the resilience within.
The loss of my best friend to aggressive kidney cancer has been a profound experience that reinforced my resolve to cherish moments of joy and connection. Although we never fulfilled our shared dream of attending a Metallica concert together, his spirit remains intertwined with the music, particularly during Lars' drumkit emergence and Kirk, James, and Robert's guitar strumming.
On the day of my friend's funeral, we found solace in playing Rock Band 4 for hours, the music echoing down the street in a celebration of his life. This game holds a special place in my family's heart as it combines technology, music, and cherished memories with loved ones. Our Rock Band 4 anniversary video immortalizes our friend's musical funeral celebrations, ensuring his memory lives on.
The sense of community and camaraderie experienced during concerts underscores the power of music to unite people across generations and backgrounds. It reinforces my belief in the transformative potential of communication, whether through music or organizational processes, to foster connection, healing, and resilience.
In closing, my journey as a woman in IT, fueled by my love for heavy metal and dedication to enhancing patient care, is a testament to the enduring impact of passion, perseverance, and purpose. With the support of the Headbang for Science Scholarship, I am eager to continue my academic and professional pursuits, channeling the spirit of equality and empowerment embodied by the heavy metal community into my work and beyond.

Last year, my department faced a devastating loss of six employees, including two who tragically took their own lives. Witnessing my peers struggle with profound pain and grief while grappling with uncertainty on how to address their struggles, I recognized the urgent need for action. Despite my own ongoing battle with mental health, I took the initiative to engage with the behavioral health department at my workplace, collaborating with vice presidents and safety personnel to advocate for meaningful support measures.
Together, we developed a comprehensive plan to address mental health needs within our department. Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
With eight years of experience in IT support, including four years dedicated to resolving IT support tickets, I have encountered and overcome numerous challenges, including gender stereotypes. One memorable incident occurred when a customer expressed surprise at a woman handling IT matters, to which I responded with humor and determination. This encounter epitomizes the mindset I've encountered throughout my career, driving me to defy expectations and excel in my field.
Recognizing the transformative power of the internet, I embarked on a meaningful journey in 2009 by co-founding a microloan organization in collaboration with my mother and Rotary International. Leveraging online connectivity, we partnered with a Rotarian in Kolkata, India, to empower widows to enter the workforce, establish businesses, and navigate the challenges of the caste system. The internet facilitated invaluable connections with women across the globe, enabling us to build a supportive network and implement impactful initiatives.
In 2013, I had the privilege of traveling to India with my mother to meet some of the widows we had supported. Witnessing the tangible impact of our microloans, from the establishment of saree sewing shops to the creation of jewelry from dried apples, reaffirmed the significance of our efforts. To date, our nonprofit has raised $25,000, empowering countless women to pursue economic independence and create opportunities for future generations.
While I may not maintain direct contact with the beneficiaries of our nonprofit, I am confident that the ripple effects of our work extend beyond economic empowerment. Through access to education and employment opportunities, I envision the sons and daughters of these widows forging careers in the IT sector and beyond, contributing to positive societal change. The internet has been instrumental in realizing this vision, serving as a catalyst for collaboration, empowerment, and transformation on a global scale.
Chronic Boss Scholarship
In my application for the Chronic Boss Collective, I want to convey my profound gratitude for the opportunity to share my journey as someone who has navigated the challenges of chronic health conditions. My experiences serve as a testament to resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to personal and academic excellence.
At the age of twelve, my life took an unexpected turn as symptoms indicative of rheumatoid arthritis manifested. This journey was further complicated by my mother's battle with ankylosing spondylitis, casting a potential shadow of vulnerability over my health. Despite encountering dismissals and skepticism during the diagnostic process, I persevered through the challenges of high school, seeking solace in volunteering and art to nurture my spirit without compromising my well-being.
Transitioning to college, I embraced a resilient mindset that propelled me to academic success. I served as a tutor, supplemental instructor, and president of the Phi Alpha Theta chapter within the history department. Despite potential hindrances posed by my health conditions, I staunchly rejected the notion of early retirement from the workforce. This commitment remained steadfast even when confronted with the disheartening statistic from the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center, revealing that 60% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis become unable to work a decade after onset.
My dedication to academic pursuits seamlessly mirrored my personal life. I explored 17 countries, embarked on a mission to Africa to educate young girls on women's health, and contributed to the community as a guardian for WW2 veterans on Honor Flights. Founding a nonprofit empowering woman in India through microloans and volunteering in various capacities, including at food banks, homeless shelters, and on the board of an organization training dogs for schools, became integral parts of my journey.
Advocating for mental health causes and raising funds for heart disease research have been pivotal aspects of my commitment to making a positive impact on the world. Through these endeavors, I have woven a tapestry of experiences that defy the limitations imposed by chronic health conditions, showcasing the triumph of an indomitable spirit over adversity.
I am applying for the Chronic Boss Collective with the hope that it will provide support for my ongoing graduate studies. This scholarship holds the potential to not only contribute to my academic pursuits but also empower me to continue making meaningful contributions to society through my nonprofit work and advocacy initiatives.
Thank you for considering my application. I am enthusiastic about the prospect of contributing further to my field of study and making a positive impact on the world.
