Westport Big & Tall sells clothing in big and tall sizes for men.

They know it can be tough for students considered ‘big’ or ‘tall’ in a “normal”-sized world. Standing out isn’t a bad thing - students should take pride in what makes them unique. The Westport Big & Tall Scholarship will support students who are big or tall and proud of their size. Through this scholarship, students will be encouraged to embrace who they are and celebrate their differences.

High school seniors and undergraduate male students are eligible to apply if they wear clothing sizes that are considered ‘big’ or ‘tall’ (6 feet 2 inches or taller and/or size 44 waist or bigger). To apply, write about a time that your size or height led to a funny situation.

I have always been tall and taller than my peers. When I was little my parents always thought other kids would catch up one day, but very few have caught up so far. I have always been at least a head taller than my classmates. One funny story around my height is from when I was two years old. I don't remember this incident, but my mom does and she has mentioned it several times over the years. It was a really hot summer day in Phoenix, and we were at the zoo. I was playing in the splash pad area and my mom let me go in the water with only a pull-up swim diaper on since it was so hot. My mom started to notice several people were looking at me and whispering to each other. She ignored them at first, but then one parent was bold enough to let her know she thought I was too old to be in a diaper. The lady asked why I wasn't toilet trained yet and even scolded my mom for not getting me trained in a timely manner. It turns out several parents around the splash pad were discussing this. They saw that I was so tall they assumed I was much older, like around four or five years old. Obviously, I was not that old and two years old is not too old to be in diapers. Because of my height other people judged my mom for not being a responsible parent. Even though I can't remember this story, my mom has mentioned it throughout my life. When we talk about it, although it is a funny story there is a lesson to be learned in there. The main lesson is we shouldn't judge others by their appearance. In this case, no harm was done because it was just a few nosey people who wanted to tell their opinions without being asked. However, this example shows how the assumptions of others can influence a situation. I have learned through my life that we shouldn't make assumptions or judgements of other people's lives at all, but certainly not based on how they look. When this type of assumption is made, like in a job interview or other similar situations a good candidate can be passed up or discriminated against just because of how they look with no regard to their qualifications.
