My educational plan is closely tied to my fascination with understanding and learning about human behavior, particularly within the legal system. I plan to pursue a double major in psychology and criminal justice at Florida State University. This path will enable me to understand and explore the motives of criminal behavior, comprehend the mentality of those involved, and assist law enforcement agencies in understanding suspects. In this field, I will need to further my education and obtain a PsyD in psychology to achieve my long-term career goal of becoming a forensic psychologist.
I have always found myself interested in the “Why?” Why did they commit this crime? Why did you feel the need to? Watching shows such as “Criminal Minds” has made me view perspectives within the legal system differently. Although not everything in the show is real, it reflects on the many psychological disorders, such as trauma and abuse, that make humans do unbelievable things. My inspiration comes from the idea that everyone has a story behind their actions, even the ones who have caused harm. Their background and trauma shape who they are, and becoming a forensic psychologist will allow me to combine my wider studies and empathy to make ethical decisions. This path connects directly to my personal values: empathy, fairness, and service. I believe in meeting people for who they are, listening to their stories, and helping them find stability and hope. My family’s sacrifices have taught me resilience and responsibility, and I carry those lessons into every goal I set.
Although this career choice may be challenging, my passion and dream of becoming a forensic psychologist empower me to continue my education and pursue my long-term goal. As stated previously, I will need to obtain a PsyD in psychology and complete postdoctoral training, which will provide me with the necessary training. The ultimate goal is to obtain licensure and ultimately pursue my dreams of becoming a forensic psychologist.
I am applying to this scholarship because I come from a community and family where educational opportunities are not always easily accessible. Yet, I have worked hard to excel academically and lead with purpose. I know my family has always worked hard, but we have never had the financial stability to fully support the cost of college. Even with their sacrifices, paying for tuition, books, and other college expenses is something my family simply cannot afford on their own. This scholarship would help reduce the financial burden on my family as I continue my education.
Little by little, I will meet the requirements to become a licensed forensic psychologist. Currently, applying for scholarships will help me achieve my goal and enable me to pursue a degree in psychology at one of Florida's top universities.
Higher education has always been something I wanted, even though I was not sure whether my family could afford it. The purpose of higher education is not just to earn a degree or check off a goal on a list. Its purpose is to provide the tools to be told not what, but how to think and to question the world around me. It would represent exploration of ideas, opportunities, and communities that were once out of reach for me. This deep understanding of the power of higher education and my firm determination to succeed are what make me a strong candidate for this scholarship.
The impact of education on my family and me has motivated me throughout my educational career. From early on, I had to learn to be independent. As the older daughter of a single immigrant mother, I was often put in charge of translating, caring for my sister, and transporting my family everywhere. I also had to start working at a young age to help pay for bills, surgeries, and groceries, as my mom’s salary was not enough. Despite my trying my best to support my mom in these matters, I saw that she still struggled financially and emotionally. This is why, as a child, I decided to take my learning into my own hands and not bother her with any more educational and cultural barriers I faced. I have had to navigate my journey through high school and into college on my own, with no clear pathway for me to follow. For example, I have had to navigate the process of applying for scholarships and colleges, including the financial aspects. Also, when trying to determine where and what I want to study, I have had to consider my financial situation, as I know my family would not be able to provide much financial support.
While educational independence felt like a burden at times, I learned that it also gave me more intellectual freedom than most students. This freedom helped nurture my love for learning, as I have been able to do so without the immense parental pressure that other students face. I have been motivated to attend the University of Notre Dame, where I will major in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering. While in college, I plan to further explore my interests by developing my piano skills and maintaining my commitment to physical fitness.
Freedom has also allowed me to develop the leadership qualities I have today by helping peers who, like me, have struggled to fall in love with learning. I have drawn on my own experiences and been able to relate to my peers to better understand educational needs. By taking initiative and noticing who needs help, I empower my peers, even when they do not believe in themselves, push them to try more challenging classes, apply to scholarships, and take chances on themselves.
I aim to continue being a leader, encouraging students like me to believe in themselves, take risks despite their fears, and seize educational opportunities. With the support of the Steve’s Drive Scholarship, I can accomplish all of these goals and ensure that I have access to a high-quality education without my financial standing hindering me.
