Samuel "Sam" Stoy was a driven young man. Family, friends, shipmates, classmates, and acquaintances have all spoken highly of Sam’s character, determination, and humor. Remarkably, Sam managed to accomplish an incredible number of childhood dreams and professional experiences in such a short time.

As a youth Sam was involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, the church youth group and contemporary worship band at Shepard of the Lakes Church in Grayslake, IL. He took up SCUBA diving at the age of 13 and achieved advanced certification when he was 15. It was Sam’s dream to become a commercial diver. In 2015, he was selected for the People-to-People student ambassador program and traveled to Australia where he had the amazing opportunity to dive on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

As a young man, with a desire to achieve his dreams and defend his country, Sam joined the Navy in 2019. Sam completed his last active-duty assignment as an Information Systems Technician Second Class (IT2) in Washington, D.C. at Joint Base Andrews. Following active duty, he affiliated with the Navy Reserve in 2023, and attended Tidewater Tech in Norfolk, VA. At Tidewater Tech, Sam attained his welding certification and completed his graduation requirements shortly before his death.

Sam was a fitness enthusiast. He had been a Command Fitness Leader at Joint Base Andrews in Washington D.C. and competed regularly in CrossFit events. He passionately encouraged others to challenge themselves to reach their goals and was regularly heard to say, “One more!” His smile and positive attitude were always present. Because of Sam’s physical fitness and larger than life personality, his peers in his graduating class often referred to him as “Captain America.”

Although Sam was unable to complete his life's ambition, he felt strongly that providing help for others is a worthy commitment.

This scholarship seeks to honor the life of Sam Stoy by supporting students who demonstrate leadership and are enthusiastic about making a difference for fellow students.

I am a 24-year-old young adult who loves working with her hands and doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. A few years ago, I took a job at the shipyard doing fire watch and that was my first time ever hearing about welding and how much it is used in our tools, equipment, and a lot of other things day to day and that's when my curiosity for welding began. Now I'm enrolled at Tidewater Tech where my curiosity for welding turned into love! Since enrolling into the program, I have learned so many hands-on skills and processes. One of my favorite things about Tidewater Tech is that we have instructors that have been in the welding field for years and have lots of knowledge. Deciding to go to trade school was a sacrifice well worth my time, I am able to network, meet new people, and also gain job skills. While I'm at school, I constantly encourage my peers to keep going and don't give up! When it comes to career fairs and upcoming events involving employment I help keep them updated. Helping people and making someone's day better brings complete joy to my heart! I aim to continue to be able to help and lead as my life and career goes on! This scholarship would be a huge help with student loans and tools I appreciate you for your support and considering my application. Sincerely, Isis Branch

After shopping around for multiple trade schools, I stumbled upon Tidewater tech and did a school tour. I love how involved the program is, there are so many amazing reasons as to why I would suggest the school to other people looking to get an education in welding. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better class, most of the students in my class are so uplifting, really positive and motivated individuals. It’s really something rare and special, especially being 26 and going back to school after all of the years out of high school, I don’t know what my expectations were, but I definitely did not expect everyone around me to be so supportive of each other, it’s truly amazing. On some days when I am ahead of projects and schoolwork a few of my classmates will invite me into their booth to look at their work and vice versa. I always try to go above and beyond for my classmates as well as myself, of course, we are all very proud of each other and it’s truly something special to have people surrounding you that are always sharing their stories, techniques, and most importantly their support and motivation for themselves and others. For most of my adult working life all I have done is work in the restaurant industry. My mother thought getting me into a welding certification class would be fun for me given my artistic nature, and she would be correct. I immediately became so intrigued with welding and had such a blast, given that, I still chose to go back to my comfort for some years and I am beyond grateful for my mom always teaching me to step out of my comfort zone no matter how uncomfortable it may be, always try new things, if you do the same thing you’ve always done, you will get the same results. I made the decision to go to trade school and finally change my life for the better and for my future.

Hi my name is Wesly lane and I’m a current trade school student enrolled in combination welding. Welding interest me down to the science and the aesthetic , it’s like an art to me. Starting to weld was everything I hoped it would be it seems difficult but once you get it you’re going. My friend first enrolled in tidewater no tech for combo welding and would talk about it at work, while I was thinking about welding for probably 2 years I thought “why not”. When it comes to class I’d say I’m a leader I always help my classmates with a process I feel comfortable with or if they are struggling, I tell them the way I look at it in my head so we can share the same thought process , I even help physically just outright showing them how to do it. I’m very social and happy in school, one of my classmates took their time to text me and thank me for the help I gave them. Even when it comes to the staff at the school I always give a helping hands and are one of the first people they go too if they need a task done or any assistance. I tell my classmates “my booth is always open” because I enjoy learning with everyone as a group all growing and getting better by the day. I grew up with just my mom and sister in the home so I was always the man of the house while trying to be a good big brother and role model. I lead in a lot of ways in life and would truely appreciate any scholarships offered to me.

Jason Jimenez-Fores, I chose to enroll in the Combination Welding program at Tidewater Tech in Norfolk because I wanted to take a shot at learning how welding works and acquire new skills and techniques and gain real experience to help build my career at 18 years old since joining the program l've been gaining real experience how to do things l've never done before and preparing me for the field. The instructor has been teaching me and the other to do our best and been supportive and patient and also taught us the importance of safety is this industry and teamwork how responsible you have to be and which has made me even more dedicated to improving every day. After completing the program I plan to go work at the Newport News Shipbuilding where i can continue building my skills and gaining more knowledge and also gaining even more experience. And my long term goal is becoming certified welder and grow into leadership roles where i can help train other and share my experience what learned and also want to be able to support myself and my family while doing something i enjoy. Joining Tidewater tech has to be the best decision i’ve made and it’s a first step towards building my bright future and gaining real experience for the future field.

Hello my name is Preston and I am currently enrolled in the Combination/Maritime Welding course at Tidewater Tech in Norfolk, VA. I have chosen to enroll in Welding to challenge myself and grow to become better in life. A better husband and a better son. Welding is a skilled trade that really allows one to push themselves and put in the work to become great! So far I am really enjoying this opportunity to learn this trade. Loving the staff and people that are here and the students that I get to learn with. Sam's story really resonates with me. I wish I had the chance to meet him and learn from him. I believe we would have connected because I also love physical fitness and have a lot of ambition. I am thankful that there's a scholarship for us created in his memory, that is very special. I hope to be considered for this scholarship and to carry on a piece of Sam's story with me on my journey. If selected I promise to uphold and honor his memory by being a superhero like he was. Helping and being generous to my fellow students now, while striving to be bold and innovative in my future career are ways in which I will complete this mission. I hope and pray my future is full of good things. Though I know tomorrow is not promised. To Sam and life. Thank you to everyone for your consideration and God bless.
