A sense of community is critical to the success of its youth.

Unfortunately, many small towns have a lack of community building which takes away from the educational support of their students. In order for students to build the skills and experiences that they need to flourish in college, it’s critical that they’re supported by their communities.

This scholarship seeks to support the next generation of bright students so they have the financial resources necessary to pursue their college degrees.

Any high school senior in Ohio or West Virginia who has volunteering experience may apply for this scholarship.

To apply, tell us what community means to you.

To me, the word community means family. Not only your immediate family, but your neighbors as well. People that gather around you in times of need or just in general. I live in a very small community and in my opinion, it’s a great community. I love the fact that I know all of my neighbors, and that if I needed some thing, I know that they would be there whether it be a cup of sugar or to borrow gas for the lawn mower. Growing up in a small community has been a great experience for me. I have made a lot of neighborhood friends that I still have to this day. I have helped my older neighbors shovel their sidewalks and rake their leaves. In return, my neighbors have helped us when we have been in need. I remember my mom’s car would not start and she was able to have someone help her jump the battery. It’s a great thing to know that you can rely on others to help and it’s a great feeling to know that you can help them as well. Looking at the broader community, we come together and help support each other. Whether it’s local businesses that you try and support or showing up for the local farmers market. These are the things that make a community great, people supporting each other. As a community, you want its members to know that they have support from others in the community. When there’s a tragedy you come together and support. When there’s a grand opening you come and support. People just want to know that others will show up for them and in return they will show up for you. This is what makes a community strong. I know that as I grow up, and the world takes me to different places, I can always rely on my community to give me a sense of family and makes me feel like I will always be home. Community is full of memories that people have the rest of their lives. A community is a sense of belonging and to me my community gives me that feeling. I will always cherish my community because of all the things that I have learned, all the memories I have made, and all of the love that I have felt from the members of my community. My community is my family.
