Roxanne Hoegger Alejandre is an incredible colleague who has advocated for over 20 years to better the lives of survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking in the San Francisco Bay Area.

One of Roxanne’s special projects was providing advice and legal representation for disadvantaged pregnant or parenting teens at Hilltop High. This work allowed her to directly impact lives and to help teens see all of their potential and go after their dreams.

This scholarship commemorates Roxanne’s work by supporting pregnant or parenting students who are pursuing post-secondary education.

Any high school senior in CA who is a pregnant or parenting teen may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they have demonstrated financial need and if they will pursue some form of higher education (including ESL classes) after graduation. However, preference will be given to students from the San Francisco Bay Area. Additionally, Hilltop High School students are particularly encouraged to apply.

To apply, tell us what you hope to gain from pursuing higher education (ESL classes included). Responses written in Spanish will also be accepted. Include your child's birthday or due date. Additionally, upload a photo of yourself or a photo of you and your child, if applicable.

When I first entered high school, I didn’t really understand or want to pursue higher education. Around 10th grade I stopped going to school and started working as a cashier. I wanted to be independent and earn money so I could buy things I needed and wanted. Then I got pregnant, but my partner would provide financially for us, and I still didn’t think school was important for me. It wasn’t until my second pregnancy, and losing the support of my partner, that I then realized I was alone with two children. Being alone with my two kids was when I realized it was up to me to provide and give my children the opportunity to have a good future. It was then when I understood education is the key to success in life. This gave me the motivation I needed to complete high school and continue higher education. I want to go to college to become skilled for a future career as a childcare worker. I have decided to study child development. This field focuses on how little ones develop, learn, and feel as they grow up. I have seen how important a caring adult can be, especially when they work with kids every day. Watching my mother work as a child care worker made me notice how babies and little kids learn new things from people who listen, explain, and give them chances to try. I want to learn how to create safe and fun places for kids to explore. I want to learn about healthy development, how to support kids who have different needs. Also, this career will help me financially provide for my two kids. I want to study child development that will give me real chances to earn a steady paycheck and support my two children. This will also let me follow my passion. At the same time, I want to choose a degree that helps me be a good role model for my kids. College will also give me ideas for helping my own kids succeed. I hope to use what I learn to make a difference in my community, too. I want to be there for the moments that matter, like helping future scholars get excited about reading, counting, and sharing with friends. By studying child development, I can grow into a strong, caring professional and a positive role model for others. I want to be a role model for my two children; my daughter Sielani born January 6, 2024, and my son Juniel born October 26, 2025. As a teen mother, there were many times when I wanted to give up on my education. However, I know that I need to be the example my children need for them to succeed. I want to be able to show them never to give up, and if I completed high school and earned a college degree as a teen mother, they can do the same.
