When I was a child, I dreamed of becoming a doctor so I could help people and make them “better.” As I got older and began to seriously consider my future, I thought nursing would be the best path for me. I worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) for several years, gaining first hand experience in patient care. During that time, I learned a lot about the healthcare system and myself. While I found fulfillment in helping others, I eventually realized that nursing was not the right fit for me. However, I still had the desire to work in a hospital setting and be part of helping patients heal and recover. I started researching other careers in the medical field—ones that could combine the cool science I was interested in, require critical thinking skills, and direct patient interaction. That’s when I discovered Nuclear Medicine. The science behind it fascinated me, it was new and different, and I knew I wanted to pursue it. When researching more into the field I learned that the first step towards getting into Nuclear Medicine was becoming a Radiologic Technologist. I applied to a Radiology Technology program, was accepted, and I’m now studying in a field that truly excites me. Radiology speaks to both sides of who I am: the caregiver and the problem-solver. I’ve always enjoyed science and math, and radiology allows me to apply those interests in a meaningful way. I love that I get to be part of the diagnostic process, using technology and anatomy knowledge to help physicians understand what’s going on inside the body. At the same time, I get to interact with patients, often during vulnerable or stressful moments for them. Being able to offer a calm presence, explain procedures clearly, and provide reassurance is something I take pride in. Radiology plays a crucial role in modern healthcare. Diagnostic imaging is often the first step in identifying injuries or illnesses—from broken bones to life-threatening conditions like cancer or internal bleeding. It's fast, non-invasive, and low-risk, making it an essential tool for doctors to make well informed treatment plans. In emergency settings, radiology can quite literally save lives by providing immediate insight into what’s wrong. But beyond the technology, radiologic technologists themselves are a vital part of patient care. Sometimes, we are the first healthcare professionals a patient encounters. Our professionalism, empathy, and communication can shape their entire healthcare experience. Choosing radiology has allowed me to align my love of science with my desire to care for others. I’m excited to continue learning and growing in this field, and eventually specialize in Nuclear Medicine. I know that by working in radiology, I’ll be making a real impact—both in the diagnosis and treatment process, and in the small but powerful moments of compassion I can give to each patient.
