In June 2024 my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic colon cancer. As a senior this year while being with my family and trying my best in school I’ve also had to learn how to face the new normal at home while also trying to accomplish everything I need to do be able to be successful in my career path. Although I don’t want to pursue a career in STEM I am going to college to get my radiology degree with an end goal of having a career in the CATH lab so that I can still make a difference in someone else’s life just as nurses and doctors have helped to make my family’s life a little more bearable during this time of hurt. With my dads diagnosis he has been unable to work for the past 6 months and will continue not being able to continue in the workforce for at least another year and a half and minimum. With all of the hospital expenses for his needs I don’t want to burden my parents on worrying for my future. Being there for my parents hasn’t been easy as I’m also trying to still accomplish so much at school and trying to take care of my mental health too. I knew from the beginning of high school I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field because if I can be the light and make a difference in someone else’s life that is all I wish to do. Having the best support system has not only helped me but my family and has made more of a positive impact in our lives than ever imagined. I continue to come closer with my faith in God and I know he will guide me no matter the outcome of my dad. I’ve learned that I can’t worry and to turn my what if’s into even if’s because even if the worst happens I will always have my family, friends, and God to help me through the hardest and most painful times of my life even at a young age. Not only do I have to put my family first during this time but I have to be a role model for my 12 year old brother even though we have had to overcome so much already. I inspire to have the light and joy of Noah and this scholarship can help show that no matter in the darkness and most difficult part of life there is still light and major achievements to accomplish because anyone is capable of anything they dream of as long as they try their best.
