Marybelle Huggins Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Mary Belle Huggins (November 11, 1932 ~ July 2, 2024) was born in Paragould, Arkansas. She was the first of six children of Monzel and Lora Huggins. She took care of all her sisters and brother as much as they would let her for all of her life, bringing new clothes at the start of the school year and also making sure her parents had what they needed. She became a nurse in the VA hospital and worked there until her retirement at 55. She was an intensive care nurse and was given the opportunity to be head nurse several times, but she refused. She also joined the Army Reserve Nurse Corp where she rose to the rank of Colonel.
Nursing is a noble and necessary profession that is the bedrock of hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare offices. Nurses are often responsible not only for providing quality care to their patients, but also for putting their minds at ease, answering questions, and comforting family members.
This scholarship aims to honor the memory of Marybelle Huggins by supporting students who share her passion for nursing.
Any high school senior in Arkansas who is pursuing nursing may apply for this scholarship opportunity, but applicants from Paragould are preferred.
