Education

Lovely B. Thomas believed deeply in the power of hard work and service to others and was known for lending a helping hand.

Students who share this spirit will grow into the next generation of changemakers and leaders in their communities, creating meaningful change in their neighborhoods and in the greater world. However, many students are hindered by financial challenges, systemic discrimination, or other hurdles that can make it difficult for them to earn the education they need to pursue their greater goals.

This scholarship seeks to honor the life of Lovely B. Thomas by supporting students who exhibit the same passion for helping others.

Any low-income, first-generation high school, undergraduate, or graduate student who is an underrepresented minority pursuing an education major may apply for this scholarship opportunity. However, applicants who are Georgia residents and those with 3.5 or higher GPAs are preferred.

To apply, tell us about a story from your life where you had to work hard to get through a challenge or to help someone else, and how this experience impacted your desire to pursue education or healthcare.

Additionally, submit a video no longer than five minutes sharing your story out loud — the same one from your essay. Speak from the heart and expand on your essay by adding anything you couldn’t fully explain in writing. This video could include: what motivates you personally to pursue education or healthcare, how your background shaped your values, what person or moment has made a lasting impact in your life, or how hard work and service (the values of Lovely B. Thomas) show up in your life. You can record the video on your phone, computer, or any device. No fancy editing is needed; just speak clearly and be yourself. Submit a shareable link (YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) in the application form. Make sure the video is viewable by anyone with the link.
