Isaiah Vasquez was a proud former Liestman Elementary student who was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the young age of twelve.

Isaiah was cared for by incredible teams of healthcare workers until his passing two years later. He loved school and was very proud of his education, even though it was cut short. He was also incredibly grateful for his medical teams and their kindness and skill.

This scholarship aims to honor the memory of Isaiah Vasquez by combining his passion for school, learning, gratitude, and life.

Coming from a third-world country, I saw firsthand what a lack of access to healthcare does to a community. It meant that when someone went to the hospital, even for something minor, chances were they weren’t coming back home. In my small town, there weren’t enough doctors, especially those specializing in advanced medicine. Witnessing this fueled my passion for the medical field and solidified my desire to become a doctor. Majoring in public health will bring me one step closer to achieving my career goals of becoming a neurosurgeon and making a meaningful impact in communities like the one I grew up in. Since I was young, I knew I wanted to pursue medicine it has always been my dream. Over the years, I have heavily researched my public health major, especially at the University of Houston, and I know it would be a great fit for me. After earning my bachelor's degree, I plan to attend medical school, complete my residency at a hospital, and ultimately achieve my goal of becoming a neurosurgeon. Since 2019, my father’s legal troubles have placed a heavy financial strain on my family, forcing us to rely almost entirely on my mother’s paycheck. With my father’s unstable business and legal fees adding to the burden, my mother had to stretch her income to cover my sister’s tuition, three other kids, and paying for rent and other bills for our house. I watched as the weight of it all took a toll on her and she grew weaker exhaustion became her norm. Yet, she kept pushing forward, and her resilience became my biggest source of inspiration. These hardships meant learning to live with less, fewer meals out and smaller grocery trips. We adjusted because we had no other choice. Through these experiences, I developed an understanding of sacrifice, hard work, and resourcefulness. I took on more responsibilities at home, helped my siblings, and became more conscious of managing money. Most importantly, I realized that financial security isn’t the only measure of success strength, perseverance, and the ability to adapt to any situation that comes your way matter just as much. The setbacks my family endured shaped me into someone who doesn’t back down from challenges but rises in the face of adversity. These lessons have fueled my work ethic throughout my four years of high school, whether in academics, leadership, or community involvement. I will carry these same values into my college journey, using them to continue growing and making the most of every opportunity.
