Larry Jackstien Jazz Piano Community Impact Scholarship
This scholarship aims to honor the life of Larry Jackstien by supporting young jazz pianists and inspiring them to have lasting impact in their communities through performances, education, and mentorship.
Any high school senior, undergraduate student, graduate student or certification student in Utah who has experience playing jazz piano within a school, university, or community jazz program may apply for this scholarship.
To apply, tell us how jazz music has changed your life and how you plan to improve your community through jazz performance. Additionally, link two videos: one of a solo jazz piece or jazz medley of your choice with improvisation and one of you playing jazz piano at a concert. Submit a link to your videos as public YouTube links or as Google Drive links. Settings should be set to "public" or "anyone with the link can view." If we can't access your videos, your application won't be considered. Awards will be given based on future community impact and goals, not on technical skill alone. All levels of jazz pianists encouraged to apply.
Larry Grant Jackstien was a beloved father, a talented jazz pianist, and a devoted hospitality executive in Utah.
Larry not only performed extensively on jazz piano, but he was also a talented songwriter, performer, and concert producer. He shared his love of music with musicians and non-musicians alike, hoping to instill a love of "great music" in all he knew. Larry always mentored young musicians and gave many performers a chance to try genres, venues, and instruments they had never attempted before in a jazz format. He played with many great artists in the numerous jazz concerts and festivals he produced and started in Utah from the early 1950s to 2026.
How has jazz music changed your life and how do you plan to enhance your community through jazz performance during your lifetime?
