Lane Nicholls Trueblood was a beloved son, brother, and friend who lost his life in a search for a cure for his mental illness.

Lane tragically suffered an accidental overdose when attempting to self-medicate, seeking relief despite the inherent danger of self-medicating. He was a deeply compassionate boy who genuinely cared for others and his absence is felt by many. Lane’s story is sadly all too common, as many young people’s lives are cut short due to a lack of access to mental health treatment and support.

This scholarship seeks to honor the memory of Lane Nicholls Trueblood by uplifting students who are devoted both to their studies and to the needs of others.

Any high school senior at Walker Valley High School, Bradley Central High School or Cleveland High School in Tennessee who has at least a 2.5 GPA may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they will attend a community college, four-year university, or trade school and pursue a field of study involving education, psychology, medicine, mental health, or counseling.

Mental health is the foundation on which all things are built. Success in education, relationships and confidence are rooted in strong mental health. All aspects of life will be impacted when one has poor mental health. As an aspiring elementary educator, I understand the importance of good mental health and I am eager to support children both academically and mentally. I want to make a positive impact on every child’s life. I believe that the most crucial stage of a human's life are the earlier years. From newborn to adult, all humans are learning who they are and they make daily choices about how they want to live life. As an educator, I will be in a position where I may be the first adult outside of the child’s family to identify personal struggles, and this thought alone has inspired me to be an advocate for children’s mental health within education. In elementary classrooms, during the most formative years, children are being taught to read, write, solve math problems, build relationships, and communicate. Many students come to school with invisible struggles by the names of stress, anxiety, worry, depression, and so many others. I have found that children are so commonly overlooked because people believe that they do not feel the same emotions as adults do; however, this is so far from the truth! My dream is to be the teacher who all students feel safe and comfortable with. When the world feels heavy and seems to be upside down, I pray to be the teacher in a student's life who listens and cares, without them fearing judgment or teacher bias. I am eager to create a classroom atmosphere that brings safety, educational curiosity, and a sense of belonging. When students feel emotionally and physically comfortable they are more likely to ask questions, take risks, and grow in all areas of life. Supporting mental health within the education field means recognizing that all students’ feelings matter and helping students to understand that it is okay to ask for help. By understanding and attending to my students' mental health, I hope to gain access to help them grow in their education. As an educator I want to encourage open communication, model empathy, and respond to a students’ needs with compassion and care. Finally, it is essential to address the stigma associated with mental health, especially from a young age. It is common for individuals to grow up being ashamed of their feelings and to hesitate to reach out for support when they need it. The negativity towards mental health is a problem that we need to confront. As a future educator, I believe that it is important and also necessary to combat this common belief and teach the next generation that they should never be ashamed of their feelings and know that it is powerful to reach out when they need assistance. In my classroom, I will incorporate emotional disciplines and learning into the schedule. This plan will help students develop the ability to speak for themselves and form the vocabulary to do so effectively. Teaching children that it is okay to deal with heavy emotions will begin to combat the harmful stigma that surrounds mental health today. Prioritizing mental health in education is not just important but essential. It is my goal to create a safe environment that encourages academic and mental health education. As a teacher, I look forward to positively impacting children’s lives and combating the stigma surrounding mental health.

I am passionate about pursuing a career in the mental health field because I believe that mental well-being is a fundamental part of overall health. Yet, it is often not given the same attention as physical health. The way people think, feel, and respond to challenges shapes every aspect of their lives, from relationships to academic or career success. Recognizing how deeply mental health influences daily functioning has inspired me to want to support others in a meaningful and lasting way. One of the biggest reasons this field is important to me is the stigma that still surrounds mental health. Many individuals feel uncomfortable talking about their struggles or worry about being judged, which can prevent them from seeking help. This silence can make challenges feel even more isolating. I want to be part of breaking down that stigma by helping create a safe and supportive environment where people feel comfortable expressing themselves. Everyone deserves to be listened to and understood, and I am motivated to help foster that sense of acceptance. I am also drawn to the idea of helping people better understand themselves and develop healthy ways to cope with difficulties. Life can be unpredictable, and people face a wide range of challenges, from everyday stress to more serious emotional struggles. Having someone who can guide and support them through those moments can make a significant difference. I find it meaningful that mental health professionals can empower individuals to build resilience, gain confidence, and improve their overall well-being over time. In addition, I believe that supporting mental health has a ripple effect on entire communities. When individuals receive the help they need, they are better able to maintain healthy relationships, stay engaged in school or work, and contribute positively to those around them. By working in this field, I would not only help individuals but also contribute to stronger, more supportive communities. This broader impact is something that truly motivates me. Another reason I am passionate about this career path is the opportunity for continuous learning and growth. The mental health field is always evolving, with new research and approaches that improve how professionals understand and support others. Being part of a field that values empathy, knowledge, and adaptability is something I find both exciting and meaningful. Overall, my desire to pursue a career in mental health comes from a genuine interest in helping people and making a positive difference in their lives. I want to be part of a field that emphasizes compassion, understanding, and growth while also working to reduce stigma and improve access to care. Supporting mental health is important to me because it allows me to contribute to both individual well-being and the strength of the community as a whole.

My name is Hana Eve Goforth; I want to pursue a career in the medical field because I understand what it feels like to be at your lowest point and to need someone who truly cares. There were times in my life when my own mental health struggles felt overwhelming, and it was hard to see a way forward. In those moments, even the smallest acts of kindness made a difference. Those experiences shaped me, and they are the reason I want to be that person for others through a nursing career. Lane Nicholls Trueblood’s story deeply resonates with me. His life is a powerful reminder of how important access to mental health support is, especially for young people. It is heartbreaking to know that someone who cared so much for others was facing a battle that ultimately led to his loss. His story reflects a reality that far too many people experience struggling silently without the resources, guidance, or support they need. My goal is to attend Tennessee Tech University, where I plan to complete a four-year nursing program and then continue my education for an additional two years to become a nurse practitioner. Nursing will allow me to combine medical knowledge with compassion, giving me the ability to treat both the physical and emotional needs of individuals. As a nurse practitioner, I hope to provide care, advocate for better mental health resources, and ensure that patients feel seen, heard, and valued. My personal experiences have given me both empathy and drive. I know what it feels like to need help, and I know how powerful it is to receive it. There were moments where I felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to move forward, but the support I received helped me find strength and healing. That is why I am committed to helping others who may feel lost, unheard, or alone. I want to be there for people during their hardest moments and help guide them toward stability and hope. Lane’s story makes this mission even more meaningful to me. It reminds me that compassion is important, but it must be paired with access to proper care and support systems. I want to honor his memory by being someone who can recognize when a person is struggling and take action to help them in a safe and meaningful way. No one should feel like they have no options or no one to turn to. By turning my own challenges into motivation, I am determined to make a difference. I want to help people at their lowest points and remind them that their lives matter. This scholarship would help me continue my education and move closer to that goal, while also allowing me to carry forward the message that mental health matters and that no one should ever have to struggle alone.
