Kamal R. Jones was a passionate young culinary enthusiast from Washington, D.C., who dreamed of becoming a professional chef.

Many students in the DMV area (D.C., Maryland, or Virginia) are underserved and face financial struggles that can make higher education feel out of reach. Combined with limited mentorship opportunities, it can feel impossible for the average high school student to achieve their dreams, especially in fields that they may not be encouraged to explore.

This scholarship seeks to support high school students with a keen interest in pursuing higher education in the culinary arts.

Any high school student in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia who has at least a 2.5 GPA and is pursuing the culinary arts may apply.

To apply, tell us about your aspirations in the culinary field and why you’ve decided to pursue a career in the field.

My name is Bryan Chase Gillis, and my ultimate goal in life is to start my own restaurant, fueled by a deep and enduring passion for cooking. This passion has been a constant in my life, nurtured by the love and inspiration of my mother, who raised me on her own. Growing up in a single-parent home taught me the value of resilience, hard work, and sacrifice. My mother wore many hats—provider, nurturer, motivator—and she still found time to teach me how to cook, passing down recipes that carried meaning and memories. The kitchen became our sanctuary, a place where we bonded, healed, and celebrated life’s small victories together. From a young age, I found joy and comfort in the kitchen. It was there that I discovered how food could bring people together and express emotions words sometimes can’t. Cooking quickly became more than just a hobby—it became a form of expression, creativity, and love. I learned not only culinary techniques but also the importance of patience, persistence, and pride in what you create. My dream of owning a restaurant is rooted in those early experiences, and it represents more than career ambition—it’s a tribute to the strength of my mother and the values she instilled in me. I want my restaurant to be a space where people feel welcomed, cared for, and inspired—just like I always felt at home. Beyond my aspirations in the culinary world, I also hope to serve as a positive role model for the children in my community and within my own family. I want to show them that no matter your background or circumstances, it’s possible to turn passion into purpose. There are many healthy and creative ways to express emotion and overcome adversity—whether through cooking, music, painting, or any form of artistic expression. I believe that art has the power to heal, connect, and uplift, and I want to inspire others, especially those from single-parent homes like mine, to believe in themselves and their potential. This scholarship would play a crucial role in helping me achieve my goals. I am a strong candidate because I am determined, hardworking, and focused on building a better future. Financial struggles have always been part of my reality, and my mother has carried that burden for years with strength and grace. Receiving this scholarship would not only ease that strain but also allow me to fully commit to my education and development without constantly worrying about how to afford tuition and related costs. Earning my degree is a critical step toward realizing my dream of opening a restaurant. With a solid educational foundation and real-world experience, I know I will be prepared to succeed in the culinary industry. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to that dream and give me the opportunity to honor my mother’s sacrifices by building something lasting—not just for myself, but for my family and the community I hope to uplift through food, creativity, and example.
