Despite efforts to diversify college campuses, many systemic barriers still remain and continue to make college less accessible for Black students.

As a result, Black students at four-year institutions have the lowest completion rate of all races and ethnicities, with just 45.9% completing their degrees within six years. This gap in college completion fuels the racial wealth gap due to the limited job opportunities available to adults without college degrees.

This scholarship aims to support minority high school seniors who display exemplary character and plan to attend college.

Any Black or African American high school senior who has at least a 3.0 GPA and will pursue a four-year degree may apply for this scholarship.

To apply, tell us how you plan to succeed in college and what you believe the benefits of a college degree are.

As a nursing student, I have a clear and defined plan for how I will succeed in college. My plan involves a combination of academic rigor, hands-on learning opportunities, and a strong support system. Academically, I plan to succeed by setting clear and achievable goals for myself. This includes maintaining a high GPA, staying organized, and taking challenging classes that will prepare me for the rigors of the nursing profession. I also plan to seek out and take advantage of any academic support resources that are available to me, such as tutoring or study groups. In addition to academic rigor, I understand the importance of hands-on learning experiences in the field of nursing. I plan to seek out and participate in clinical experiences and volunteer opportunities that will give me real-world experience and expose me to a variety of patient populations. I also plan to take advantage of any internships or shadowing opportunities that may be available to me. Lastly, I understand the importance of having a strong support system in order to succeed in college. This includes reaching out to my professors for guidance and support, as well as forming relationships with my peers in the nursing program. I also plan to seek out and engage with any mentorship opportunities that may be available to me, as well as seek out support from family and friends. The benefits of a college degree in the field of nursing are numerous. Firstly, a college degree in nursing will open up a wide range of career opportunities for me. As a registered nurse, I will be able to work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and schools. I will also have the opportunity to specialize in areas such as pediatrics, oncology, or critical care. A college degree in nursing also provides a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that will be essential for success in the field. This includes a deep understanding of the human body, the ability to critically analyze and assess patient data, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers. Furthermore, a college degree in nursing will also open up opportunities for advancement and professional development. As a registered nurse, I will have the opportunity to pursue advanced degrees and certifications, such as a Master's degree in nursing or a certification as a nurse practitioner. This will allow me to take on leadership roles within the healthcare system and positively impact the lives of patients. In conclusion, my plan for success in college as a nursing student includes a combination of academic rigor, hands-on learning experiences, and a strong support system. The benefits of a college degree in nursing are numerous and include a wide range of career opportunities, a strong foundation of knowledge and skills, and opportunities for advancement and professional development. I am confident that with my plan in place, I will be able to achieve success in college and in my future career as a registered nurse.
