My father, Herbert Osei, was a dreamer.

One thing I loved about my father was how much he pushed me to go after my dreams from an early age. Despite challenging trials in life, he always saw the light in me and motivated me to pursue my dreams no matter what.

Although I was only able to spend 21 years with my father, I will always remember and cherish the memories we made together all through those years. He truly was a light in so many people’s lives, and I’m so thankful to have had him as such an important figure in mine.

In honor of my late father, the Herbert Osei “Dream Big” Writing Scholarship exists to encourage African-American students to continue the pursuit of their biggest dreams in literature, no matter where their circumstances have placed them.

This scholarship is devoted to young African-American writers located in the Bronx who plan to study creative writing, literature, journalism, or related fields that set you up for a career as a writer.

You must be a high school senior who currently lives in the Bronx to apply for this scholarship. To apply, please write about why you'd be a great recipient of this scholarship, some challenges you’ve faced and/or overcome, what writing means to you, and a defining moment that has shaped your life or played a major role thus far.
