Especially for Youth (EFY) is a summer youth church camp where many young adults serve as counselors, developing leadership skills and strengthening their faith.

Serving as a counselor is a calling that can be both demanding and deeply rewarding. Counselors sacrifice time, sleep, emotional energy, and often better-paying summer jobs to serve with faith. They are mentors, lifelines, and disciples—often giving more than they receive.

This scholarship honors the legacy of lives changed at EFY and the staff who give their whole hearts and testimonies each summer.

Any Latter-day Saint (Christian) undergraduate or graduate student who is between the ages of 19 and 35 years old may apply for this scholarship opportunity if they have served as an EFY field staff member during this summer, last summer, or the summer before in one of the following roles: counselor, leader counselor, building counselor, assistant coordinator, health coordinator, or coordinator.

To apply, tell us about your experience serving on EFY field staff, the lessons you learned, and how you will apply what you learned to your future education.

I've learned that life is more meaningful when serving but specifically serving with others. Last summer I served as a counselor the whole summer and it was wonderful. I remember in one instance though in Moab I was pretty burned out and a very kind coworker offered to watch my kids for an hour so I could take a break. It doesn't sound like much, but to me that meant a lot. That week was particular difficult because my coworker assigned to the same kids as me was having a hard time and asked me to be with the kids a lot. Because my other coworker understood that what we were doing was important and that the impact we were making was powerful, he took time to let me gather my energy so I could give my best to my kids that week. Similarly, this summer working as a coordinator this summer I have been placed in a position to help those around me. I don't work directly with the youth in a company, but I understand just how powerful this program is at bring kids together and to Christ. For this reason, I have tried to pray and find ways to strengthen and encourage my coworkers. I have tried to be as hype and as spiritual as possible along with helping those who struggle take a break so that their youth can get the best experience. In my future I see a whole world of people who need help, including myself. I expect at times to be the one who is burned out and am certain there will be others in my stewardship who feel the same. My experience at EFY has taught me to never undervalue our purpose and to keep serving wherever we may stand as well as be humble enough to receive the help when needed. Serving with others brings joy. That's why I'm strongly leaning towards going on to get a P.h.D and trying to teach at a college level. I love filling the role as a mentor and I love helping others feel successful in their jobs and goals. In particular I love helping those who are in the early stages of their lives who may lack that confidence or emotional resolve because I have been that person in almost every situation of my life. It is my hope that as I do that for them, they might be able to go and do that for others. Along with that, in Church service we never serve alone. Even when we think we do, the Savior is there to stand as our mentor and our source of strength. I have learned that when we collectively serve with Him, He magnifies and consecrates our efforts for not only the purpose of others but for our own gain. I've learned I can make a difference and now I want to spend my life doing exactly that. I want to do it with others and especially with the Savior.
