Women have made great strides in accounting and finance, using their knowledge to build personal wealth and advise clients on monetary matters.

Unfortunately, women continue to face many hurdles throughout their academic and professional journeys, which can lead to a sense of discouragement. Continuing to thrive in school and successfully making it through the years of college necessary to enter financial fields requires significant determination, drive, and community encouragement.

This scholarship aims to preserve Mary Lazaris's legacy by supporting students who are pursuing the fields of accounting or finance.

Any female high school student in Michigan who has at least a 3.5 GPA may apply for this scholarship if she’s pursuing accounting or finance, but first-generation college students are preferred.

To apply, tell us about yourself, why family is important to you, and why you’ve decided to pursue a degree in finance or accounting.

Hello, I’m Anyla Harrington. Family is important to me in a numerous amount of ways. I have a family history dating far back beyond the 1900s. We actually have a book about our family history. My family hosts a family reunion every year in a different state were one of our relatives reside. We explore new places and new things together. My family is beautiful, we help each other when in need and we always come together to uplift each other. My family is the description of the “Lean On Me” song! Without my family, the void of my absent father wouldn’t be filled. My mother has worked graveyard shifts just so I could live a fabulous life. My family has literally been the village that raised me. My uncle Derrick has been the father figure that every child needs. My twin cousins Albertina and Abriona, aunt Enah, aunt Syrita, uncle Karee, cousin Della and Elizabeth, grandad, and my grandma have all helped raise me in unique ways. My aunt Enah was a beacon of light in my life, aunt Syrita helped me intellectually, Karee was the cool uncle, Elizabeth and Della showed me new things, grandad instilled peace and kindness within me, and grandma always supported me. Family has given me so many memories that no monetary value can replace. I truly thank God for the family that I have. To answer the second question, have chosen to pursue a degree in accounting or finance because it is what interests me the most. I love math/business and these majors don’t really consist of hard math. I’ve also seen how the tax man makes a grip on people😂. Proudly, I’ve took AP Microeconomics and Business 150 (a dual enrollment class) which correlates to this field. I’m also taking accounting this year and maybe even financial literacy. Did I forget to mention I attend Cass Technical High School? I love my school and how it prepares minority students for college! To get back on track, being a CPA is admirable. I could work for the government, rip-off insurance companies, or even myself. I know this field will make me a lot of money, but I’ve learned a long time ago to work doing something I’m happy with. I’m happy with numbers, I’m happy with math, I love the idea of business. I’ve excelled in math since I started school. I took pre-calculus my junior year and had the highest grade out of all of my teacher’s classes, 110%, not to mention I was with seniors. I’m taking AP Calculus this year and I’m fired up and ready to go. Life is beautiful and so is math. Getting a CPA license is such a prestigious accomplishment. Then with finance or specifically being a financial analyst, I could work for businesses like insurance companies, banks, and pension funds. Businesses need people to handle their accounting and financial tasks. The beautiful thing about working for immense businesses like these is that it will help me incorporate strategies and knowledge into my own business. I’m adamant that I want to be a CPA and get my CPA license. However, I don’t have the funds to buy myself through college. But, I am also faithful that God will make a way. I anticipate that the distributor of this scholarship will learn expeditiously from my essay that I am a striver for excellence, an overachiever, and a person who understands and has been through perseverance. Thank you for this opportunity and I hope you can help me on my journey towards becoming a CPA!
