When I first decided to pursue a degree in social work, it was driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and communities. As someone who has worked in an assisted living facility for over 16 years, I have witnessed the profound impact that compassion, advocacy, and support can have on people facing challenges. I chose social work because it offered the perfect intersection of my personal values, integrity, responsibility, and compassion, and my professional aspirations to empower others. I believed that through social work, I could be an advocate for those whose voices often go unheard and a guide for those navigating difficult circumstances. Since starting the program, my perspective on social work has deepened and evolved. Initially, I saw social work primarily as a means to address immediate needs, such as connecting individuals with resources or providing emotional support. However, my coursework and interactions with professors and peers have expanded my understanding of the field. I now recognize social work as a multifaceted discipline that combines direct service with systemic advocacy. I have learned about the importance of addressing root causes, such as social inequality and institutional barriers, to create lasting change. This broader view has reinforced my commitment to becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and has inspired me to think more strategically about how I can contribute to systemic improvements in the mental health and healthcare sectors. My ultimate goal is to serve the elderly population, a group I believe is often overlooked and underserved, particularly in the realm of mental health. Working in assisted living has shown me how isolation, grief, and untreated mental health conditions can diminish the quality of life for older adults. I plan to specialize in geriatric mental health, offering both individual and group therapy to help seniors address these challenges. Additionally, I aim to collaborate with community organizations to develop programs that promote social engagement, mental well-being, and access to healthcare for the elderly. Beyond direct service, I want to give back to the community by advocating for policies and initiatives that prioritize the needs of older adults. This includes pushing for improved funding for mental health services, creating more inclusive healthcare programs, and educating the public about the unique challenges faced by seniors. I also hope to mentor aspiring social workers, particularly those interested in gerontology, to ensure that this vital area of care receives the attention it deserves. Social work has taught me that true change requires both individual and collective effort. My journey in this program has solidified my belief that I am on the right path and has given me the tools and confidence to make a meaningful impact. This scholarship would be an invaluable resource in helping me continue my education and achieve these goals. With it, I can focus on building the skills and knowledge needed to uplift my community and ensure that no one, especially the elderly, feels left behind.
