Charles Shively and Kathleen Stone Memorial Scholarship for Psychiatric Nursing
Charles Shively was a beloved son, brother and friend who worked on the mental health floor of a hospital, as he had hoped to make a difference in the world by becoming a behavioral health or psychiatric nurse. Kathleen Stone was a dear mother who was very successful in the field of psychology while living with bipolar disorder.
Charles was very loved by all who knew him. He had a great love of reading, history, and was extremely intelligent as well as thoughtful and compassionate. He was just beginning to embark on his educational and career goals and had found a passion for working in mental health and hoped to go to college to pursue becoming a nurse in the field. Unfortunately, he also struggled with his own mental health and died by suicide at the age of 19. He is missed beyond measure by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Kathleen was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, and educator. She was also a counselor for elementary school children and had a master's degree in psychology. She dedicated her career to helping children to navigate mental health challenges at an early age. She was able to do this while living with bipolar disorder. Over her life, she benefitted from the kindness and expertise of those in the mental health field while pursuing her own place in it. Sadly, she died from complications of dementia just a month after Charles died.
This scholarship aims to honor the lives of Charles Shively and Kathleen Stone by supporting students who are pursuing nursing careers.
Any four-year undergraduate student in Idaho who is pursuing nursing may apply for this scholarship opportunity. However, applicants from Lewis-Clark State College and those wanting to go into psychiatric or mental health nursing are preferred.

The winner will be publicly announced on Jul 23, 2026. Prior to the announcement date, we may contact finalists with additional questions about their application. We will work with donors to review all applications according to the scholarship criteria. Winners will be chosen based on the merit of their application.
Award checks will be sent to the financial aid office of the winner's academic institution in their name to be applied to their tuition, and in the name of their institution (depending on the school's requirements). If the award is for a qualified educational non-tuition expense, we will work with the winner directly to distribute the award and make sure it goes towards qualified expenses.
Before we award the scholarship, the winner will be required to confirm their academic enrollment status. Depending on the circumstances, verification of Student ID and/or their most recent transcript will be required.
