Sophomore year, in a gym filled with hundreds of spectators, my coach pulled me aside and presented two options: varsity or JV. Fight for a chance at victory or end my season prematurely, grappling three mediocre wrestlers. Looking over his shoulder, I saw my potential varsity opponent, a rough, stocky senior ranked first in the league. Seeing him reminded me of our two previous encounters where he had overpowered me. Fearing a third loss, I chose to go JV, hoping to avoid the sting of another defeat. My matches wrapped up swiftly, giving me the rest of the day to spend enviously watching varsity matches: matches that had effort, stakes, and impact. Matches that mattered.
I spent the next week processing my actions and emotions. Ultimately, I came to the realization that to achieve significant accomplishments and to avoid the disappointment I felt, I needed to embrace effort, not fear it. It is an obvious conclusion in hindsight, but it was a revelation to my younger self that helped shape my perspective dramatically. I began applying this principle to every part of my life. Athletically, physically, and academically, I sought out challenges I had previously feared and avoided. The newfound workload was rough to manage, especially at first, but I gradually became more adept at balancing it all. Each time I felt my perception of effort returning to baseline, I would amp up my intensity in the activities I pursued, pushing myself harder than I thought possible.
Once summer came, I finally gained a moment of rest to look back on everything I had accomplished and all the effort I had put in. While I hadn't achieved anything extraordinary, I found deep satisfaction in my hard work. Wanting to continue this streak of meaningful pursuits my junior year, I committed to taking more challenging classes, actively seeking higher leadership roles in clubs, and giving it my all physically, in and out of practice. I gained satisfaction solely from my self-improvement, but unlike previous years, I began reaping the fruits of my labors: winning dozens of matches, podiuming at multiple reputable tournaments, earning MVP of the season, and leading the team as captain to one of the best seasons in the school's history.
It seems so simple in hindsight, but understanding the fundamental truth of effort -that treading difficult paths in life feels rewarding and ultimately gets me further toward my goals- has changed my life. I have resolved to pursue every challenge and opportunity presented to me during college, in my future career, and in all aspects of life. Whether it's in academics, athletics, or personal growth, I am determined to face my fears head-on. I will begin doing so by wrestling at the collegiate level at UCLA this fall while pursuing a bachelor's in engineering.
My name is Caleb Rivas, I am an 18 year old Senior at Mission Oak High School in Tulare California. I currently have a 3.5 GPA and have been accepted to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo California in the fall to pursue my academic and athletic future in the sport of wrestling. Throughout my life I have faced many challenges that have shaped my character and determination, I started the sport of wrestling at age 5 and continued through the present date. At age 6 my grandfather became my primary caregiver during a turbulent time when my parents were unable to care for me. He played a pivotal role in my upbringing by supporting my educational needs, helping me improve my grades and instilling in me the values of hard work and perseverance. My father entered my life at age 8 thanks to my grandfather's guidance and support. Although I never reconnected with my mother, today I am fortunate to have two two strong male figures in my life. They're involvement in my educational and personal growth has been instrumental in helping me overcome obstacles and develop resilience, I learned that no matter what life throws at you it is essential to never give up. Wrestling has been the cornerstone of my life teaching me valuable skills such as leadership, patience, perseverance and accountability. As a team captain and a Top 5 Rank wrestler in the State of California I have embraced the responsibility of being a good role model for my peers, mentoring and guiding my teammates to perform at the highest level. They say champions are built when no one is watching and I took that on my own to be the best I could possibly be and have no regrets on the outcome. Beyond competing I donate my time as a youth referee and a youth coach to our future generation of wrestlers. I've was fortunate enough to have been successful in the sport and have placed 2X CIF State Placer 7th & 8th, I also am a 4X USA State Champion F/S,USA Triple Crown,4X National Team Member. My goal in college is to study Biology and pursue a career in sports medicine. This path reflects my passion for understanding the human body in my desire to help others achieve their physical potential. Receiving a scholarship would help alleviate the financial burden of college expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies and continue striving for excellence. I am committed to working to the best of my ability both inside and outside the classroom to achieve success. Ultimately I aspire to give back to the community that has supported me by contributing to the Healthcare Field. Your support through this scholarship would not only bring me closer to achieving my goals but also enable me to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Thank you for considering me as an applicant. I am grateful for this opportunity and for your investment in students like myself. With your support I am confident in my ability to achieve my dream. Sincerely Caleb Rivas
