I can't get into too much detail, but my life has been ups and downs since I could walk. I was a foster kid moving from house to house with different caregivers at such a young age. I was separated from my younger brother for confidential reasons, which was very hard for me considering I was the older sister. I was adopted at the age of seven and my brother was adopted by another family. We didn't see each other for a while because we were getting used to a new permanent home. I soon found the positives in the early stages of my life. The first thing was that we lived within 5 miles of each other which is very convenient. The second thing is that we hang out a lot more today and go to the same school. I am proud to see my brother every day and prioritize our relationship. Today, I still suffer from PTSD, anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Though these do still affect my daily life, they do not define who I am. I focus on the things that are within my control and try to avoid negative people. I live with negative people that radiate negative energy and it is not helping anything. I accept change by looking at the past. I'm not where I want to be right now, but I'm also not where I was back then. I have a plan for the future and I am willing to work towards it. I know one day I will look back at the difficult times and know how I got to a certain point in the future when I'm on my own. I am my worst critic, my person, and have taught myself lots. Therefore, I aim to be better and not bitter.

In recent years, I have developed a serious and chronic gastrointestinal disorder. I have endured multiple hospital stays, doctors visits, tests, procedures, and bouts of unimaginable pain and embarrassment. In the past year, I have started treatments for lupus, and I recently had a feeding tube placed for nutrition. Through it all, I have learned that we all have struggles—some you see, some you don't. Illness and disability are much like an extra-curricular club you never wanted to join, but you are forced to participate in daily. But we all have a story to tell, and through the hardships, you must find your own story of redemption, growth and purpose. Not too long ago, a nationally-known photographer learned of my story, and invited me to join his team of models. In this time of diversity and inclusion, he chose me not in spite of my disability, or even because of it. He chose me because I have the courage to show authenticity, unafraid to bring my whole self to the project. I know I can bring that same authenticity with me as a freshman in college. There is something powerful about not letting your hardships finish writing your story for you. I know that seeking a major in Marketing will not be easy. But my goal is not to seek a life without struggles. Instead I seek the strength to endure, and the grace to know, that today’s struggles will lead to tomorrow’s successes. It is up to me to press onward, like this illness has taught me.
