Tanner Morse was a beloved son who passed away in an ATV accident, tearing a hole in his family and leaving his loved ones with insurmountable grief.
The loss of a child can be incredibly difficult for a parent, but it can also be life-altering for surviving siblings. Such a loss can entirely reshape a sibling’s childhood. Siblings often move through life side by side, sharing routines, secrets, arguments, laughter, and a future that feels assumed simply because it has always been there. In the aftermath of an accident, there is not only the overwhelming grief, but also the chaos of investigations and reports, and unanswered questions. Conflicting emotions can be difficult to navigate, from anger to confusion, guilt, and the relentless need to understand something that will never fully make sense. Parents are forced into survival mode, learning how to endure the unimaginable while trying to hold the rest of the family together, often without realizing how much their children are absorbing along the way.
Siblings experience this loss from a uniquely complicated place. They are grieving deeply while watching their parents grieve, trying to understand what has happened while sensing the emotional weight in every room, and learning how to live in a world where their sibling no longer exists, even as life continues to ask things of them—school, friendships, expectations—at a pace that feels impossibly fast. Their grief is quieter, less visible, and too often misunderstood, yet it becomes something they grow up alongside, shaping how they see family, safety, risk, and themselves.
This scholarship aims to recognize children who have lost siblings by rewarding their resilience and supporting them through their pursuit of higher education.
Any high school senior or four-year undergraduate student who has lost a sibling in an ATV or UTV accident may apply for this scholarship opportunity.
To apply, tell us your story about losing your sibling. There are suggested prompts below, but you should share whatever feels true to you.
Losing a sibling changes the way you move through the world. It often means learning how to grow up and move forward while carrying both grief and love, sometimes while watching the adults around you struggle with their own loss.
In up to 300 words, please share your story. You may write about your relationship with the sibling you lost, how your life changed after their passing, or how this experience has shaped who you are becoming. You may also reflect on what you wish others understood about sibling loss, what has helped you keep going, or how you hope to carry your sibling’s memory with you into the future.
There is no right or wrong way to tell this story. We are not looking for perfect writing, resilience, or closure, only honesty and reflection. Share what feels true to you.
