Barbara Steinhauser Kalinowski Memorial Scholarship
Barbara Kalinowski was a beloved friend and colleague who was a kindergarten teacher in West Babylon, New York.
Teachers have a uniquely powerful role in the lives of children, and they can make a strong impact on students’ feelings about school. Teachers who reward effort, not just outcome, can help build confidence and a love for learning in their students. Sadly, many hard-working students don’t get recognition unless they manage to earn top grades. Encouraging students to keep working on topics that don’t come easily to them allows them to experience the joy of learning, maximize their potential, and become successful citizens.
This scholarship seeks to honor the life of Barbara Kalinowski by supporting students from her county as they pursue higher education.
Any high school senior in Suffolk County, New York, who benefited from extra help in elementary school may apply for this scholarship opportunity. However, applicants from West Babylon, West Islip, or Bay Shore High School are preferred.
To apply, tell us about an aspect of learning that didn’t come easily to you, how your teachers showed you patience, how this experience impacted your education, and what your plans are for future education.
Many elementary students are late bloomers. Please describe an aspect of learning that did not come easily but that you worked hard to overcome. Were any of your elementary teachers encouraging and patient? How did this experience make a difference in your education? Tell us about your plans for your future education.
