Arizona Students and Student Debt

Arizona is home to many prospective university students, with a little over one million K-12 students in Arizona's public schools. In 2023, Arizona had a four-year high school graduation rate of 77.5%.

In the fall of 2023, Arizona's public universities experienced record-breaking enrollment numbers. Despite this growth, only 30 percent of Arizona high school graduates successfully attained a college degree or certificate within six years, according to the Arizona Board of Regents.

Prospective students have many in-state options, as there are a little over one hundred colleges and universities in Arizona. Some of the state's most well-known colleges include Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University, and the University of Arizona.

Costs of Higher Education in Arizona

If you are an Arizona resident, you may already be experiencing the burden of high tuition costs associated with a college education. The cost of attendance for colleges in Arizona is 14.17% more than the national average. Students at public universities in Arizona can expect to pay $24,016 per year. The University of Arizona is considered by many to be the best university in the state, but tuition is one of the highest at $12,384 for in-state students.

Situations like these present a real problem for students who have to worry about the affordability of their education. However, there are plenty of opportunities available to help students in Arizona pay for college! Just because tuition is costly does not mean students have to miss out on the college experience.

Student Debt in Arizona

While many schools offer financial aid to their students, this often doesn't cover all expenses. One way to further finance your education is through student loans. In 2022, Arizona college graduates had student loan debt with an approximate average of $35,000.

Despite the high cost and debt often associated with college, undergraduate and graduate students still find value in higher education. With a bachelor's degree, people can earn higher wages and lessen financial anxiety. Arizona students should take advantage of the numerous scholarship opportunities available to them to make the costs of college more affordable.

Arizona Scholarships

The state of Arizona offers scholarships and grants to Arizona residents, like the Arizona Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (AzLEAP). Need-based grants are provided as student financial assistance to low-income undergraduate students who are residents of Arizona and have demonstrated significant financial need.

These grants aim to support students in attending postsecondary institutions within the state. Each participating institution awards the AzLEAP grant, with a maximum award of $2,500 for the academic year. On average, students receive $1,000 for the academic year through this program.

The PMI Phoenix Chapter Scholarship is an annual scholarship for undergraduate and graduate students in project management or related fields. This scholarship opportunity is available for students at all degree levels, including doctorates, and is specifically open to residents of Arizona. PMI supports the development of emerging leaders by providing scholarships for undergraduate and graduate studies in the field of project management or related areas of study.

Moreover, the John C. Lincoln Memorial Scholarship offers financial aid to college students, particularly those from Arizona or Ohio, pursuing a four-year degree majoring in welding engineering.

Who Is Eligible for the Arizona Promise Program?

As of Spring 2023, the following guidelines qualify you for the Arizona Promise Program.

  1. Residency Requirement: Be an Arizona resident for in-state tuition purposes.
  2. Academic Qualifications: Graduate from an Arizona high school with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  3. FAFSA Submission: Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 1 of senior year of high school.
  4. Federal Pell Grant Eligibility: Timely completion of the FAFSA application and qualify for ANY federal Pell Grant.
  5. University Admission: Be admitted and enroll as a first-time, full-time, on-campus degree-seeking student at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, or the University of Arizona, in the fall semester immediately following high school graduation.

Note: Some gaps in enrollment, such as for military service, may be allowed. Please check with the universities.

What Do I Have to Do to Apply?

The application process is different for each scholarship program. Some scholarships require students to submit their artistic works, like paintings or poems, and others ask for students to answer a few brief questions. Some of the most competitive scholarships are no-essay scholarships, which only require eligible applicants to hit the "Apply" button.

The specifics of the scholarship application process can be entirely tailored to your needs and skills. College and university students have the flexibility to choose scholarships that align with their strengths. For instance, if you excel in writing, scholarships that require essays could be a fitting choice, allowing you to showcase your writing talents and increase your chances of success.

Do Scholarships Have a Minimum GPA Requirement?

The basis for selection varies from scholarship to scholarship. While one scholarship might require a 3.0 GPA, another might not use a student's GPA at all in their review process. Students with less-than-perfect grades do not have to worry about losing out on scholarships. There are plenty of possibilities to make your scholarship application stand out without having a stellar GPA.

Knock out your college expenses by applying for financial aid scholarships. Whether you're graduating high school seniors or enrolled in community college, Bold.org has scholarships for you!
