Anita Moore-Hubbard "Butterfly Effect" Memorial Scholarship
Anita Moore-Hubbard (June 7, 1949 – July 12, 2014) was a devoted teacher, college advisor, and adjunct professor for more than twenty-five years.
Anita was a woman of deep roots and wide wings. Raised in Mount Vernon, Alabama, by her parents Nora and Julius Moore, Sr., she was instilled with a spirit of service that she carried to Norfolk State University and into her 1971 sisterhood with the Delta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Anita was committed to volunteering whether it was for causes like the Special Olympics, La Casa Norte or the Young Women's Leadership Charter School of Chicago. She was a champion of youth arts programming as one of the "mothers" of Chicago's Kuumba Lynx Ensemble. Anita could always be counted on to cook or bake for the needy, particularly the unhoused, which is why her daughter founded the Nita's Knapsacks Annual Winter Drive for the Unhoused in December 2020.
As a French major, Anita Moore-Hubbard dreamed of working at the United Nations but life kept her travels domestic. However, she carefully saved every travel itinerary and story shared by her daughter, Sonjanita. While Anita was "anchored" in Chicago, she inspired her daughter to be her "wings" in the world! Much like the migration of the butterflies she loved, her legacy continues to travel across borders through the lives of the students she mentored and the wanderlust she inspired.
Eligibility Requirements:
- African American students from the state of Illinois.
- Must be a current High School Senior.
- Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative unweighted GPA.
- Open to students with a commitment to community service or volunteering.
To apply, tell us where you would like to go, how traveling would help you see the world differently, and what ancestors you would carry with you on your journey. Additionally, upload a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or volunteer organization.
Anita Moore-Hubbard may not have walked every land she dreamed of, but she made sure her daughter and her students had the wings to do so. This scholarship is about intergenerational dreams and the way education allows us the opportunity to see the world in new ways. Your essay can address this idea by answering these two questions:
- If you were given the wings to fly to any community in the world—locally, nationally, or globally—to learn or serve, where would you go and why? Describe what draws you to this community, how the experience connects to your values, and how what you learn could create a “Butterfly Effect”—positively impacting others and your future path.
- Who are the ancestors, elders, or mentors you would be “carrying with you” on that journey? Share how their guidance, sacrifices, or values have shaped who you are today and how they influence the path you hope to take.
