Sloane Stephens Announces $30,000 Scholarship on Bold.org in Loving Memory of Her Grandparents during Black History Month!

February 09, 2024

SAN FRANCISCO (February 9, 2024) – Bold.org, the scholarship platform committed to fighting student debt through philanthropy, has partnered with American tennis player Sloane Stephens for the third cycle of her Doc & Glo Scholarship! During Black History Month, when the nation is honoring the culture, contributions, and sacrifices of generations of African Americans, Sloane and Bold.org are debuting a $30,000 Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship, in loving memory of her grandparents, Doc and Glo, for students majoring in the health/medical field and/or attending an HBCU.

Sloane Stephens says: “My beloved grandparents, affectionately known as Doc and Glo, instilled in me from a very early age the importance of pursuing a quality education even amidst my training and dreams of becoming a professional tennis player. My grandfather, Dr. Noel Smith, emigrated from Trinidad to study Medicine at Howard University on a scholarship before ultimately settling down in Fresno and building a life with my grandmother, Glo, who served as the President of the National Council of Negro Women and Board Member of the Fresno Arts Center, among other positions. For our third cycle of the Doc & Glo Scholarship, I wanted to support the next generation of Docs and Glos out there who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine or studying at an HBCU. Education is the foundation for success, and it’s something that stays with you forever. I’m proud to work with Bold.org again to provide these opportunities to deserving students in need so they can become our next generation of community leaders and compassionate medical professionals.”

Sloane Stephens isn't just a powerhouse on the tennis court; she's a champion for change off it. Her ascent to tennis stardom, crowned by a triumph at the 2017 US Open and rise to the world's top 3, is matched only by her unwavering dedication to uplifting communities. Launching the Sloane Stephens Foundation in 2013 at the age of 20, Sloane turned her spotlight into a beacon of hope for underserved kids. Her foundation is a game-changer, bridging the gap for over 10,000 youth annually, offering them not just a chance to thrive in education and sports, but also safe havens to learn, exercise, and play.

Stephens continues making her impact through the $30,000 Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship, which was created in honor of her late grandparents, who were instrumental in Sloane’s life and firm believers in the power of education. Lemon Perfect, the fastest-growing brand in the enhanced water category, shares Sloane's vision for a healthier, more equitable world and continues their commitment to Year 3 of the scholarship. The scholarship will be divided among six winners, with each awardee receiving a $5K scholarship.
