SAN FRANCISCO (September 21, 2021) – Point guard for the Mavericks, Tyrell Terry, creates the $10,000 Tyrell Terry “Challenge and Opportunity” Scholarship for two high school seniors who have faced adversity and showed tremendous perseverance. The scholarship will award $5,000 to two students: one from the Mavericks’ home state of Texas and one from Tyrell’s home state of Minnesota. The award, now available on custom scholarship platform Bold.org, seeks to give back to the students from the places that Terry considers most formative.

The Tyrell Terry “Challenge and Opportunity” Scholarship was inspired by Tyrell’s personal challenges throughout the last year. In March 2020, Tyrell’s college basketball career was put on hold due to the pandemic. As a full-time student athlete at Stanford University, his life took an unexpected turn when basketball and in-person education was put on pause. Like many others, Tyrell struggled during these unprecedented times. Instead of letting obstacles hinder him, he took the time as an opportunity — a moment to grow, reprogram and establish what matters most in his life. He began to prioritize his mental health in a way he never had before, and he started to plan for his future, which led to him to signing with the Dallas Mavericks.

Education has always been a top priority for Tyrell. Quality of education was a determining factor for where he played college basketball. Through this scholarship, Tyrell hopes to inspire those who have taken life by the reins, despite the inevitable challenges. The scholarship will help each student embark on their next chapter as they pursue higher education. To apply, eligible candidates must write a brief essay about what challenges they have faced and how they have made the most out of difficult circumstances.

Tyrell Terry says: “I'm excited to announce my partnership with Bold.org to give scholarships to two young students, one from Minnesota and one from Texas. I've been committed to my education my entire life, and even to this day, learning is an ongoing journey for me. My goal with this scholarship is to support students who share a similar outlook on their studies. I'm thankful for this opportunity and look forward to meeting and rewarding these incredible young students.”

Terry joins a long line of athletes and public figures who make a point of supporting education, including other Bold.org scholarship sponsors such as NBA stars Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and Dwyane Wade, professional tennis player Sloane Stephens, producer and DJ 3LAU, NFL Wide Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace, Grammy-winning band Imagine Dragons, professional MMA fighter Cat Zingano, actress and entrepreneur Jameela Jamil and actor, Terry Crews.
