Our story

The Willie Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the life of Willie Gray, who passed away from cancer at age 36. In his short time on this earth, Willie made a tremendous impact: he served in the United States Air Force, including a deployment during the Middle East conflict, and later worked alongside Please Assist Me to help build their package management program from the ground up. Willie truly cared about the employees, residents, and staff he interacted with. He was a pure soul who made sure everyone around him was taken care of — even in his final days. Willie attributed his character to his mother, who raised him and his brother as a single mother. Just as many members of his community had once stepped in to help her, Willie wanted this scholarship to help other single mothers and their families get ahead.

Our goal

Special traits or qualities that made him stand out: Willie had a rare ability to make everyone feel cared for — employees, residents, staff, it didn't matter who. He carried a quiet selflessness that showed up most clearly at the end of his life, when he was still focused on making sure the people around him were okay, even when his condition was determined to be terminal. An event, pursuit, or trait that captures his legacy: Willie served his country in the United States Air Force, including a deployment during the Middle East conflict, and later channeled that same sense of service into civilian life — working alongside Please Assist Me to help build their package management program. Whether in uniform or on the job, he consistently put others first. Details that encapsulate who he was and how he lived: Willie was shaped by his mother, who raised him and his brother as a single mother with the support of their community. That experience gave him a deep respect for what it takes to raise a family alone — and it's why he wanted this scholarship to exist: to help other single mothers get ahead, the same way his community once helped his.

Willie was the embodiment of being a good human. He led with kindness, compassion, empathy, and selflessness always. So, it comes as no surprise that he wanted his legacy to be continuing to help others. We are all better for having known him and his big heart. He will be so missed.
