Our story

The Tommye Jo Morris Memorial Scholarship was established in loving memory of Tommye Jo Morris, whose life and legacy were devoted to the growth, development, and maturity of generations of children throughout her lifetime. Her unwavering commitment to youth, education, and community uplift continues to inspire those who follow in her footsteps.

Our goal

Communities Working to Unite Youth (CWUY), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has proudly served the Rankin County community since 1988. For more than 37 years, CWUY has faithfully fulfilled its mission by providing programs that educate, enrich, enlighten, and encourage youth. Through a holistic approach, CWUY unites young people and families by promoting positive family values, preventive education, and proactive efforts to combat community deterioration and juvenile delinquency. This scholarship seeks to ensure that countless young people across Rankin County, the state of Mississippi, and surrounding states have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and grow into responsible, compassionate, and upstanding citizens of the United States of America. In honor of Tommye Jo Morris’s enduring legacy, this scholarship will award $500 scholarships to multiple students each year who are pursuing careers in education (teaching), performing arts, or community-based advocacy. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate a strong commitment to community relations, partnership-building, and collaborative service, reflecting the values Tommye Jo Morris exemplified throughout her life. Through this scholarship, CWUY continues its mission to invest in the next generation of leaders—those who are dedicated not only to personal success, but to strengthening communities and uplifting others.
