In Loving Memory
Vernon S. Lee, II was a native of Petersburg, Virginia. He attended Petersburg High School, where he was an athlete and scholar. Vernon was a member of the Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball Team. He was a loyal friend and loved by his classmates. After graduating from Petersburg High in 1985, he continued his education at Virginia State University. Vernon became a member of the VSU Basketball team, then he became a graduate coaching assistant. He enjoyed mentoring and coaching young men on the court as well as in life.
After leaving VSU, Vernon began his career working in various public high schools. He worked for almost two decades at Freedom High School as a security specialist, and he coached the girls varsity basketball team and the tennis team. At Freedom High school, Vernon was known for lifting everyone’s spirit. He made every student and staff member feel seen, valued and capable of accomplishing any goal. He left coaching, so he could watch his son, Vershon play football at the University of South Caroline. After a few years, he found his way back to the sport he loved and become an assistant coach for the boys varsity basketball team at Petersburg High School. Vernon inspired, supported, coached and mentored countless students and individuals. We honor the impact of his dedication and work, the lives he touched, and the futures he forever changed.
This scholarship is to honor the man, the husband, the father, the coach, the mentor, our friend, and his legacy by supporting a student-athlete from Petersburg High School in Petersburg, Virginia with his/her post-secondary education.
