Our goal
EJ Johnson was a beloved father, brother, son, and friend whose life was marked by resilience, compassion, and a deep desire for justice. A recovering heroin addict and a person living with bipolar disorder, EJ also carried the label of a convicted felon—yet he never let his past define his hope for the future.
EJ was just one semester away from earning his college degree when he tragically passed away due to suicide. Despite the challenges he faced, he believed fiercely in second chances. He envisioned a world where individuals with criminal records—especially those in recovery and managing mental health conditions—could access education, rebuild their lives, and be seen for their potential, not just their past.
This fund honors EJ’s legacy by supporting scholarships for students who have been impacted by the criminal justice system and are working to pursue higher education. By removing financial barriers, the EJ Johnson Second Chance Scholarship Fund aims to create a path forward for those ready to begin again—with dignity, opportunity, and support.
