Our goal

We, as Sedona educators, have created a scholarship to honor the memory of our beloved friend and colleague, Susan Simon. She was an inspiring principal at West Sedona School and Desert Star Community School. Susan lived and breathed leadership. She modeled and taught the skills closest to her heart. We want to honor Susan’s legacy and inspire a graduating SRRHS senior by awarding a scholarship to a student who exemplifies leadership. We encourage Susan’s colleagues, family, friends, and former students to join in this effort to give back to area students who plan to further their education. Susan taught us that leadership can be exhibited in many ways, not only by the “typical” student council officer or honor society student. Our ideal candidate will be a student who has demonstrated the leadership qualities of resilience, perseverance, critical thinking, team building or problem-solving skills. We will strive to be as open-minded and open-hearted as Susan was, acknowledging “the hidden giftedness” in our students. “Inspiration is all around us. It bombards our senses trying to get us to notice. Open your eyes. Open your hearts. Receive all the magic that is offered to you on a daily basis and then give some of it back to the world.” -Susan Simon, wonderful educator, administrator and friend

When I moved to Sedona in 1994, I felt sure that I was meant to meet someone here that would change my life. That person was Susan Simon. I am honored to carry out her legacy through this scholarship fund.
