Our story
Mattie Louise Johnson was a force of nature, a trailblazer who carved a path for Black educators in Indianapolis, demanding better education and equal access for generations.
A dedicated educator for 42 years, she began her career as a substitute teacher due to segregation, eventually securing a full-time position at Crispus Attucks High School, before moving to Shortridge High School as a librarian and English teacher. Ultimately, she retired from Washington High School, where she championed Black history—whenever possible—within her English curriculum.
Her passion extended far beyond the classroom. A lover of literature, an avid reader, and deeply interested in Black history and politics, she brought these passions to life for her students, opening their minds to the world and their own power. Music and dance also held a significant place in her life, enriching her experiences and those of her family and students.
Mrs. Johnson earned her bachelor's degree from Ball State University and a Master’s degree from Butler University, specializing in English literature. Her deep commitment went beyond academic achievements; she was a builder, ensuring financial stability and generational well-being for her family. She diligently secured property and land, demonstrating a profound understanding of the importance of generational wealth and a safe haven for her loved ones.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mrs. Johnson was a champion of her family. Her strength, love, and unwavering insistence that we are responsible for our own advancement were deeply ingrained in her values. She tirelessly worked to build generational stability, constructing extensions to her home, ensuring her family had a secure foundation to build upon. Her life was a testament to the power of education, community engagement, and the vital role of individual responsibility in achieving collective progress.
Mattie Louise Johnson's legacy is one of unwavering dedication, tenacious determination, and profound love for her family and community. She was a true inspiration, paving the way for countless others to follow.
Our goal
I'm raising funds for the Mattie Louise Johnson (MLJ) scholarship because I deeply believe in the power of education to transform lives and uplift communities, particularly for young Black scholars. My grandmother, Mattie Louise Johnson, instilled in me and my sisters a profound appreciation for the transformative potential of education, a value that guided her life's work for over 40 years. As a dedicated English teacher in the Indianapolis Public School system, she exposed us to the richness of literature, the complexities of politics, and the beauty of our cultural heritage. She fostered in us a strong sense of identity rooted in our ancestors, empowering us to envision our own potential and responsibilities.
This dedication to education, coupled with her deep commitment to our community, is the foundation upon which I am building this scholarship. It's a direct reflection of my grandmother's life's work and a critical investment in the future. The current climate, unfortunately, often presents significant financial barriers for Black students pursuing higher education, particularly at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This scholarship addresses a crucial need, supporting aspiring scholars who share Mrs. Johnson's dedication to education and a desire to contribute to a more just and equitable future. Developing the next generation to focus on education and community is vital to our collective progress. This scholarship is not just a financial contribution, but a continuation of my grandmother's legacy, ensuring that future generations can reach their full potential.
