Our story

The Mendoza Scholarship is a heartfelt initiative born from my personal journey and experiences as a first-generation college graduate. I am a Salvadoran-born individual who was raised in a community where educational opportunities were scarce, and financial hardships were a daily reality. My story is not unique, but it is a testament to the power of support and the impact it can have on a person's life. My Journey: Growing up in El Salvador, I witnessed the struggles of my family and community members as they worked tirelessly to provide basic necessities. Education was often seen as a luxury rather than a right, and the path to higher education was fraught with obstacles. However, I was determined to break the cycle and pursue a college degree. As a first-generation student, I faced numerous challenges, from navigating the complexities of the education system to managing financial constraints. The turning point in my journey came when I received a scholarship that provided not only financial relief but also a sense of validation and encouragement. This support was crucial in allowing me to focus on my studies and pursue my goals without the constant worry of financial instability. I successfully graduated, and the experience instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and a commitment to helping others who face similar challenges.

Our goal

Inspired by the support I received and driven by a desire to give back, I established The Mendoza Scholarship. The fund is dedicated to providing financial assistance to first-generation students from Central American backgrounds who are in their first or second year at a community college. Our mission is to alleviate the financial burdens that often hinder these students from achieving their educational aspirations. Goals of the Fund: Provide Financial Support: The primary goal is to offer scholarships that cover tuition, textbooks, and other essential educational expenses. By doing so, we aim to reduce the financial barriers that prevent students from focusing on their studies and completing their education. Empower Students: We seek to empower first-generation students by giving them the resources and support they need to succeed academically. This includes not only financial aid but also mentorship and guidance to help them navigate the challenges of higher education. Foster Community and Cultural Pride: The fund aims to celebrate and honor the rich cultural heritage of Central American students. By supporting these students, we hope to inspire pride in their roots and encourage them to contribute positively to their communities. Create a Ripple Effect: By investing in the education of first-generation students, we hope to create a ripple effect that extends beyond individual recipients. Educated individuals are more likely to give back to their communities, support their families, and inspire future generations to pursue higher education.
