Our story

Sanford "Sandy" Meisner was a legendary acting teacher in the 20th century. His parents were Hungarian Jewish immigrants to the United States. Meisner taught for 60 years and trained 37 actors who were nominated for or won Oscars. While visiting the Caribbean island of Bequia, Meisner and his long-time partner, Jimmy Carville, discovered a homeless deaf child who had been abandoned by his family. Sandy and Jimmy raised the child, named Boolu, as their own and engaged in several charitable activities on the island, including the founding of school for deaf children. Meisner approach to actor training has been described as simple, direct and effective. We hope to emulate Sandy's approach in our own work and continue his tradition of opening our arms to others in need.

Our goal

We want to give artists from marginalized communities and artists from poorer countries better opportunities in the performance arts. One of the biggest challenges for these groups is to provide quality actor/director/writer education. We have already started this process at the Meisner Institute, networking with organizations and people in these communities in the USA and in 23 other countries. We have helped start training programs in the Philippines, China, Indonesia, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Poland, and the UK. We are currently working with Chicano Hollywood in the USA to create similar programs in this country. We want to more actively recruit teachers from these communities and believe a scholarship fund would be the perfect vehicle to focus these recruitment efforts. We want to empower all peoples to tell their stories so that we can begin to illuminate the full human experience. We fervently believe this empowerment is one of the paths to a more peaceful world.
