Our story

In Loving Memory of My Grandmother: A Tribute to Her Strength, Empathy, and Dedication As I reflect on the life of my grandmother, I find myself deeply moved by the incredible strength and resilience she embodied every single day. Her story is one of perseverance, love, and sacrifice, and it is one that I want the world to remember. This scholarship fund is dedicated to her, as a testament to the legacy she leaves behind—one rooted in education, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to family and community. My grandmother was a woman who lived through some of the most difficult times in history, including the harrowing years of World War II in the Philippines. She bore witness to the devastation that war brought to her country, yet she never allowed it to define her. Instead, she became an example of how to rise from adversity, not only for herself but for everyone around her. Her strength was not just physical; it was deeply emotional and spiritual. She remained grounded in her faith, an unwavering pillar of hope and guidance for our family. As an educator, my grandmother was a beacon of hope for many underserved children in her community. She believed that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and she worked tirelessly to impart that belief to the next generation. My grandmother was not just a teacher in the classroom; she was a teacher in life. She taught her children, her students, and even those in her community about the power of knowledge, compassion, and the importance of always striving for more—no matter the obstacles. She raised two children on her own, pulling herself and her family from the depths of poverty. She worked endlessly, even after retirement, to raise her grandchildren, often sacrificing her own needs to ensure that we were provided for. I remember how she would always give her last meal or a small sum of money to ensure we had what we needed. She never once complained, because she believed that education and goodness were the most valuable gifts she could give us. It was through her actions, not just her words, that we learned the importance of hard work, humility, and empathy. Even at an older age, my grandmother continued to push boundaries. She enrolled in law school, determined to become a lawyer, and did so with the same drive and determination that had fueled her earlier years. She also inspired my grandfather to pursue higher education as well, even at an older age. Her pursuit of knowledge was a constant, never ceasing, even when life presented obstacles. She would tell us stories of how, as a young girl, she walked miles in worn-out shoes just to get to school everyday. Those stories resonated deeply with us, teaching us the value of resilience and the importance of pursuing education no matter the challenges. In addition to her role as a mother and educator, my grandmother was a gifted writer. She wrote poetry, short stories, and letters that captured the essence of her thoughts, hopes, and dreams. Through her writing, we got a glimpse into her soul—the thoughts of a woman who had lived through so much but remained hopeful, kind, and deeply committed to making the world a better place. Her words continue to inspire me today. She was also a devoted servant to her community, always giving her time to help those less fortunate. She volunteered for pro bono work and never hesitated to assist the poor with legal matters, always working to ensure justice and fairness for those who couldn’t afford it. Her kindness knew no bounds, and she constantly demonstrated the importance of caring for others, no matter their situation. She lived by the values of integrity, moral fortitude, and a deep sense of community. My grandmother’s legacy is one of selflessness and devotion. She dedicated her life to education, not only for herself but for the generations that followed her. She believed in us—her children, grandchildren, and the children she taught—and always reminded us that our future success was built on the foundation of education, hard work, and kindness. We owe everything we are to her. It is because of her that we, her children and grandchildren, dedicate this scholarship fund in her name. This fund is a tribute to the woman who shaped our lives in more ways than we can count. We hope that this scholarship will continue her legacy, helping others, just as she helped us, achieve their dreams through education. To my grandmother: Your love, wisdom, and strength continue to guide us every day. You may no longer be with us, but your memory, your lessons, and your spirit live on in each of us. This scholarship is a small token of our gratitude, and it will forever serve as a reminder of the incredible woman you were. We love you dearly, and we will never forget your sacrifices.

Our goal

The Maria Aurelia Del Valle Scholarship Fund is being created in honor of my grandmother, Maria Aurelia Del Valle, a dedicated educator who passionately believed in the transformative power of education. Later in life, she pursued her dream of becoming a lawyer, exemplifying her commitment to lifelong learning and the importance of education in shaping a better society. Her belief in the value of an educated community and her advocacy for access to education have inspired this scholarship, which aims to support those who share her drive for personal growth and societal change. This scholarship is specifically for Filipino Americans aged 40 and older who are aspiring to pursue higher education but have been hindered by life circumstances, financial limitations, or a lack of access to opportunities in their earlier years. Many of these individuals have faced challenges that prevented them from attending college when they were younger, but now, they are determined to pursue their academic goals and improve their lives through education. The mission of the Maria Aurelia Del Valle Scholarship Fund is to create pathways to higher education for individuals who have long been underserved and are now seeking the tools to empower themselves and contribute positively to their communities. This scholarship honors Maria Aurelia Del Valle’s legacy by supporting those who, despite the obstacles they’ve faced, are driven to succeed and build a better future through education.
