Our story

Linda Kay Monroe Whelan grew up in Riverside, CA and for nearly 23 years she worked in Alvord Unified School District where she taught High School English/AP, AVID and was also a High School Guidance and Certified College Admissions Counselor. In 1991 Linda won the Walmart Teacher of the Year award for Alvord Unified School District. She considered her students "her kids" and worked tirelessly to ensure they had access to higher educational opportunities and the resources to achieve their goals. Linda lived a life in selfless service and loved hosting her annual “Holiday Adopt a Family” party at her home every December to anonymously help families in her school district and within the community celebrate Christmas, by receiving donations of clothing, food and gifts during the holidays. She supported many causes including the Life Rolls On foundation by attending their Night by the Ocean Gala and by volunteering at their fundraising booth during the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. She was a proud member of First Congregational Church in Riverside and an avid volunteer for their Project Food program and annual Thanksgiving & Christmas feeding events. Linda's legacy lives on in her sons and all who knew her, as well as through this scholarship.

Our goal

The goal of this scholarship fund is to honor Linda Kay Monroe Whelan by raising funds to make a monetary donation in the amount of $1,000 to help one (1) graduating high school senior in California who has done volunteer work within their community to help that recipient pursue their college undergraduate goals of attending and graduating from a University.
