Our story
A benevolent man dedicated to public service and humanitarianism who served in the Vietnam War, 101 st Airborne. Upon his return home he completed studies at Southern Illinois University, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Gamma Upsilon Chapter “KS Krooks”. After graduation he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. Once he relocated to California, he began a career with the City of San Diego as a grounds maintenance worker prior to advancing into leadership as a Labor Relations Manager, Chief Deputy Director of Water Operations, Water Department Director and General Service Department Director, prior to his retirement.
An avid outdoors man who hosted camping events, horseback riding excursions and vacations for family and closest friends while volunteering with agencies that worked to provide access to clean, safe and reliable water across sub-Saharan Africa.
Our goal
In memory of our beloved father, the Larry Joe Gardner Memorial Scholarship Fund is being created to support aspiring minority, college bound students pursuing interest which align with his passion for water conservation and public service. He was graduate of Southern Illinois University, and lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
We are creating this fund to ensure minority, students seeking to pursue either a two year or four-year degree in criminal justice, public service or conservation are able to pursue their dreams.

Mr Gardner was a long time friend and i considered him to be my brother. This is a way I can honor his legacy and his commitment to the brother of Kappa Alpha Psi especially Gamma Upsilon at Southern Illinois University.
