Our story
Kayla Nicole Monk was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. At six days old, she had her first of 3 open heart surgeries. The Norwood Procedure reconstructed the right side of her heart to be able to function for the left side. This procedure along with God’s grace and mercy gave Kayla, her family and friends 23 wonderful years.
Kayla was a loving daughter, sister, niece, cousin and most importantly friend. She was a feisty young woman that voiced her opinions and had priceless facial expressions. She had a passion for helping people and loved culinary arts. She loved cooking for and with her family which created memories to last a lifetime. Kayla had a vision that she wanted to achieve and set her mind to accomplishing each goal.
Our goal
Kayla was a fun and easygoing girl who had a passion for helping people. Even though Kayla didn’t get to see her dreams come to fruition, her family and friends will continue to make her dreams a reality. The KNM Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship that will help assist a minority female who has a passion for culinary arts or STEAM to keep her legacy alive. The goal of this fund is to be able to assist minority female students in funding their educational expenses.
