Our story

Ken graduated from Western Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1967 having played varsity football, baseball and basketball. He pursued his love of basketball at East Carolina University and after college went on to play in semi-pro and recreational leagues until the 1980's when he became a basketball referee. As a highly ranked referee he was able to stay "in the game" in high schools around the Baltimore metropolitan area and colleges throughout Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania and West Virginia for another 20 years.

Our goal

Kenneth Hartzler was a superb athlete but his favorite sport by a mile was basketball. Because of his love of the game, we are honoring his memory with a scholarship fund for students that share that passion for basketball.

I’m making this donation to provide help to fine young men and women interested in sports and possibly officiating sporting events in the future.

In memory of my dear brother-in-law who always greeted me with a warm hello and ended our visit with an "I love you", I am honored to contribute to something he truly loved. RIP, dear Ken.
