Our story

Although Juanita—affectionately known as “Bahka” by her family, friends, and community—did not have the opportunity to graduate from a university or college, she possessed a deep and unwavering belief in the power of education. She was determined that future generations in her family would have opportunities that had not been available to her. As a result, she placed a strong emphasis on academic achievement, encouraging her children and grandchildren to pursue excellence in their studies and to take full advantage of every educational resource available to them. Her commitment was not merely verbal; she actively supported their learning, celebrated their accomplishments, and instilled in them a sense of discipline, pride, and purpose. In addition to her devotion to her family, Juanita was a tireless and dedicated servant to her community in Ward 8, particularly in the Anacostia neighborhood. She maintained a strong and lasting connection to her beloved Armstrong High School, where she contributed her time and energy in support of students and community initiatives. Her efforts reflected a genuine desire to uplift those around her and to create opportunities for growth and empowerment. Juanita was a true trailblazer, known for her initiative and leadership in addressing community needs. She helped to organize and lead a wide range of grassroots efforts aimed at improving the quality of life in her neighborhood. These included coordinating block clean-up campaigns to promote pride and safety in the community, organizing voter registration drives to ensure that residents’ voices were heard in the democratic process, and participating in marches and demonstrations that advocated for social justice and equitable resources. Through these actions, she not only addressed immediate concerns but also helped to build a stronger, more engaged, and more unified community. Her reputation as a trusted and effective leader extended beyond her immediate circle. Local leaders and organizers frequently sought her support and guidance, recognizing her ability to bring people together, mobilize action, and inspire meaningful change. She was deeply respected for her authenticity, her commitment to service, and her willingness to stand up for what she believed was right. Despite her many responsibilities and accomplishments, Juanita was also known for her vibrant spirit and love of life. She cherished spending time with her family and friends, and she especially enjoyed dancing and celebrating life’s joyful moments. Her energy and enthusiasm were infectious, and she encouraged those around her to embrace life fully, to find joy even in challenging times, and to live with passion and purpose. Above all, Juanita was dearly loved by those who knew her. Her legacy is one of strength, perseverance, generosity, and joy—a testament to a life lived with intention, impact, and an enduring commitment to both family and community.
