Our story
Juanita Robinson English was a proud graduate of Howard University. She moved from Aliceville, AL to attend Howard University and graduated in 1946.
While a student, she was active on campus and valued her friendships. She enjoyed being part of the Howard Players and got involved with local community organizing. She met her husband Dr. Leo Victor English (Howard Medical School, 1944) while playing poker at a Howard Alumni event in Detroit. They moved to San Jose, CA in 1954 where they raised their family. They continued to be active with the Howard University Alumni Association and cherished their friendships with their Howard community.
Later in life, Juanita became a Licensed Marriage, Family and Child Therapist. She worked with Alum Rock Counseling Center in San Jose, CA. She especially loved working with children. Juanita was an avid reader who dreamed of writing a children’s book about her own childhood in Alabama. She often said, “I’m very blessed. And I hope I have given something in return.”
Our goal
The Juanita Robinson English Fund has been established in her memory. It will provide funding for Howard University undergraduate students to support in covering costs of books and tuition. This scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to two Howard University students (incoming freshman - rising seniors).

I never knew the English family, but reading about Juanita and Dr. English’s struggles with racial discrimination in SJ helped me feel a little less alone and encouraged me to reach out to the NAACP for help with my own discrimination in this city. I’m grateful for the infrastructure their activism created.
