Our story

The Ivy A. Swaby Scholarship honors the life and legacy of Ivy A. Swaby, born in Kingston, Jamaica. After losing her mother early in childhood, Ivy grew up understanding struggle, sacrifice, and resilience. As a single mother raising three daughters, she devoted herself fully to her family while instilling in them the belief that education was the greatest gift they could receive. Although Ivy never had the opportunity to attend college herself, she lived a life of selflessness — encouraging her daughters and grandchildren to work hard, lead with compassion, and pursue their dreams with determination. Her legacy of strength, generosity, and hope lives on through this scholarship.

Our goal

I am starting a fundraiser for the scholarship named after my grandmother, who passed away in 2022. She encouraged me to seek education over everything. She was the type of person who used to sacrifice things for others. I believe that it is quintessential to create a scholarship fund to ensure that all the girls like myself from Caribbean descendant families. I want to have about three recipients of the scholarship while providing my network to give assistance. I was told that I could not attend college because I had a single mother. I want to ensure those from familiar backgrounds have the resources and guidance towards applying for higher education.
